Most of the early singles used auto trans fluid. I’m not sure on capacity

Automatic  transmissions in ‘48? Most references I’ve read calls for 20wt or 30wt motor oil.
Climate, weight, type of road surface should be considered.
I would think modern fork oil will work well.

No automatics in 48 Italy but it can be used.

The auto trans fluid is more of a hydraulic fluid with high detergent to keep things clean ……
It’s recommended for the Nuovo Falcone and I’m using it in all the early forks that use a fluid. Been working well. If I were to use a true fork oil I’m sure it would work fine but I think I’d use something on the thicker side, not a 5 or 10 wt ????

I figured out the capacity, stand the shock up in a vice, remove top cap and pull out the plunger, remove the drain plug, fill shock until oil seeps out the drain plug, insert the plunger assy, push the shock shaft down, catch oil out of weep hole, draw plunger back up, insert drain plug. I am going to use straight 30W oil and see how that works.

Hi Jim,
Do you have the Astorino Manual ? It is or was available to download as a PDF ?? I cannot remember where now though?? This old tractor site maybe ?
Anyhow the screw on the side is a level screw, but I cannot see if the damper is extended or compressed position
when checking the level? The manual says to fit the internal cylinder and then fill oil to the level plug,,

Hi John

I translated the Airone manual to English and put in on This Old Tractor. I was just looking for note of a volume and had not read to just fill and depress the plunger. That makes sense now as the depressed plunger leaves the max cavity for fluid.

Thanks
Jim

You will know if you have too little oil when the rod is pulled to the top and hit an air pocket.

If you are looking for an official Astorino manual I doubt you will find one. According to Mario Colombo’s book on Moto Guzzi there is no such model. I believe it’s a nickname for an Airone, like Guzzino, which is a nickname for a Motoleggera or Cardellino, meaning small Guzzi.
Small Astore?

Astorino
is the nick name for the early postwar Airone that used the rear shock (dampers) like the Astore, I think up to 1949? I have translated the  early Airone manual but I still need to translate the 1948 owners manual, it has some good general info.

Thanks

Yes it can and it was the standard in the 60s and 70s but do keep in mind that not all ATF is the same and there is
no weight rating for it. I’ve read that even fork oil can vary in weight from different manufacturers so it’s best to sick
to the same brand when dialing in your suspension.

To all

I am following this with great interest as I have a 1948 Astorino

Mine is running again after a 4 year hiatus thanks to the efforts of Alan in Robert’s Creek
