Big shout out for Guzzi Retro,

I ordered parts on the 3rd of March and they are here on the 10th of March. Outstanding service, I dis have to pay UK VAT and import duties but I will gladly suffer that to get my bike going. Battery was not charging, drive gear was going round but dynamo shaft was not.!

I am having the dynamo overhauled and converted to 12 volts, they are also fitting an electronic regulator inside the end cap.  Just have to find a hooter that looks a bit like the original now.

I have Used Guzzi Retro  a number of times and they have never let me down Carlo and Arianna are very helpful.

I am riding the Falcone to Mandello again in September (1200 km) and I will be stocking up on spares then to save on duties in the future. I think I will have to pay EU tax but still cheaper than mail.

Regards

You'll also need an EU visa to ride to Mandello.

Hi Paul, I have an EU passport as well as my UK passport so no bother for me, a new entry and exit system is supposed to start in October but UK citizens do not need a visa. There is another system called ETIAS but that does not start until 2026 and I think that will only apply if your stay is more than 90 days.

Regards
Patrick

Yes Patrick, ETIAS will come into effect at the Autumn of 2026 but will concern all short stays under 90 days.
The UK system comes into effect in 3 weeks time.

The UK ETA came into effect  in early Janurary 2025 for loads of countries including the USA.  My sister in law,, who is Canadian,  needed one when she arrived late January.

The link is for travellers TO the UK, I am talking about UK citizens travelling to the EU.

This from GOV.UG website

When in 2025 will ETIAS start?

On 5 March, EU Home Affairs Ministers endorsed a revised timeline for the implementation of the Entry/Exit System (EES) and the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS).

The EES is expected to become operational in October 2025. ETIAS is expected to follow in the last quarter of 2026.

This also from GOV>UK

I can’t see that we need anything for travel in to Mandello September. Where does it say we need additional documents because I can’t see any.

You can run 12v through your 6v hooter. It will be a bit louder and it might overheat if you use it excessively as in a wedding parade. I have been using a 6v hooter on my 12v MG TC for years with no ill effect.
Another option is to strip out the internals of your original Magneti Marrelli and fit a small scooter horn in the original case. This conversion is pretty much invisible, but there is no turning back if you are doing a concourse restoration.

Thanks Alan

Good suggestions, I am not doing a concours restoration, although the bike is pretty good and to the untrained eye looks very nice,  there are a lot of small things stopping it being concours. I just want the best reliability and decent lights which enable me to see and be seen. I do take it to shows in the UK but most people are not nit picking, they just like it because it is pretty.

I will try the 12v through the 6v hooter, if it fails I will graft the scooter horn in.

Patrick - you mentioned you are having your dynamo converted to 12v - is that by someone in the UK? - I'm pretty sure mine needs looking at - charge indicator lamp stays on when headlights on (LED) goes out when the lights are off - so either regulator needs looking at or its not producing sufficient charge

Hi Richard
This is where I sent my dynamo for overhaul and conversion. Very knowledgeable chap. He also sells LED bulbs and lamps of his own design. Best to ring him in working hours.

Just remember you are running four times the power (do the maths) through a six volt horn when you run it on 12 volts.

Twice the voltage drives twice the current, but power increases by the square of the current hence four times greater, assuming same resistance.

It's so easy to find a 6v hooter no need to improvise ,,,,,,,,,,,

That seems opposite of what I was taught. I understood the current drops with higher voltage, hence the ability to run smaller gauge wire when going from 6v to 12v.

Sorry Rick but you're example of a higher voltage requiring less current for only holds true for devices intended for that higher voltage. A 12 volt bulb for example will draw half the current of a 6 volt one of the same wattage (power) because it's resistance will be double. This is proven in Ohm's law: I = E/R, likely what you were taught.

What we are discussing though is a six volt horn of a fixed resistance (R) being fed with double the voltage (E). Applying the same Ohm's Law we get double the current (I) because the resistance remains the same. Then if we look at power, being the product of voltage and current (both being double) we get four times the power. The power calculation can be shortened therefore to Power = I squared x R.
