Hi,

I'm in the process of acquiring a 1953 super alce which appears to be pretty original and I would like to make it a bit more usable for the road here in the UK.

Does anyone have any experience of fitting a brake light to a superalce?

I'm considering something like this triggered from rear brake - https://accessories.hitchcocksmotorcycles.com/33256

Is there a later tail light socket part that might be a good option to fit to the superalce?

The other addition I would like to make is to fit a speedo - are there any mechanical options that could be fitted to front hub or maybe a gps based on that might run on 6v?

Thanks in advance
Richard

For the speedo just use a cycle speedo.
I've done that on my Ercole.
Works fine.

For what it's worth, nearly all of our phones have GPS functions that will also track speed. (you can guess why they want that) LOL! Anyway clip the phone to your handlebar, bingo!
I use a enduro speedo/computer on my Giro bike, otherwise don't worry about it on the old vintage bikes. Believe it or not, we don't need speedos on old bikes in CA.

That brake light looks like the Honda 50 part I've fitted on a pair of bikes.
Use an electronic speedo for a pedal bike.

These people: dynamoregulatorconversions.com sell a really good led light board giving rear and stop light. It fits perfectly in the Superalce light fitting and of course, uses only a tiny bit of the dynamo's feeble output.

Bicycle speedos work well on these old machines . I use one on my super alce and when it's not being used there I use it on one of my norton commandos because they have the same size wheels so I don't have to change the wheel size on the speedo.

I've got a Cycplus GPS speedo.  Compact. has about 2 to 3 hours endurace on one charge. Good screen - much more visible than the speed figure display on my phone.  Charge at home. They claim 20 hrs endurance.
I expect it would charge on 6 volts. My iPhone does on my R50.

I've fitted a USB socket to my Falcone. No need to worry about batteries.

Yes - me too.  Surprisingly it’s enough for an iPhone.  If the regulator and dynamo are giving a very ragged output it may not work.  But mine does now.

This might be interesting if looking for something more period appearing. I haven't dealt with them but they've been recommended by a US friend so shipping/service should be good.

I have had a gauge made for my Falcone a few years ago. If you know what gearing you have and do a speedo cable rolling test by counting the number of revolutions in a measured distance a gauge can be made up for your machine. You could even have a screen printed face plate too and make it more period correct like we did using Veglia name.  This was done by a USA gauge repair guy.

No Mike Joel didn't... the former owner of SMTHS gauge repair formerly of Arlington Heights, Illinois did it.

The new owner Andrew Taylor of SMITHS Werk in Iowa has done a few conversions from KPH to MPH and some standard repairs for me. He can repair Vegalia gauges, VDO and others. I just saw him at the Davenport, Iowa antique swap meet yesterday at his booth. He can be reached at:

Thanks for all the options folks - one bonus is when the bike arrived yesterday it turned out that it had already been fitted with a brake light switch so that's one job ticked off :)

Tim - that speedo looks fantastic - didn't know that was an option - does it connect to a drive on the front hub? - I don't think there is a suitable drive point anywhere on the superalce - I've been looking at the digital speedos site and that looks like it might be an option  - they have a converter designed to work with 6v systems and lots of sensor options

One thing to consider about a digital upgrade is the earlier Guzzi's, I believe were fitted with Smiths instruments.

Richard ,,,,,,, if you had the gear drive type setup on the front wheel like a Falcone you could have a gauge made. I use a cheap battery powered bicycle speedo on my Super Alce when I ride. I don't have any fancy GPS equipment or a cell phone. My landline phone sits here on my desk. Emoji
With so many people in the world with cell phones it's like having a portable phone wherever I go. And I live in a rural area. So don't get all techno and just get a bicycle speedo and use the leftover money for gas. Emoji

One of my Falcones came with a Veglia non-chronometric speedo "fabrique in suisse"

Early Falcones mainly used Jaeger chronometric including rev-counters on some sports models. They typically had white faces and black lettering.

Some did have Smiths speedos.

Both mine now have Smiths chronometric (model S433/1/L)

On my Ercole I use a ISPXP bicycle speedo that I bought from Amazon
The battery seems to last well over a year and comes with a clock.
The Ercole does not have the speedo gearbox and mounting attachments on the front wheel so a bicycle type seemed the easiest fit.

I don't have the front wheel speedo gearbox on it so a cycle speedo was the easiest fit:

Hope this all helps

Gordon
