I know this is a Guzzi sight….. But, I thought I’d put the word out that I’m looking for a project Vincent rapide or comet. I’d appreciate it if anyone has any leads. Preferably stateside but all considered

Thx, Dave

Coincidence. After years of dreaming, and 18 months trying to sell my 750 SFC which is at last sold, I've just bought  a get on it and ride Rapide which I'm going to pick up in 10 days time.
I recommend you look in the UK, prices are rock bottom there.

Not rock-bottom, they will continue to go down as the oldies fall off their perches

Maybe. Put another way, cheaper in the UK than most if not all places.

There were a few Vincents but they are mostly "finished". If you've got to have a project then there are better places to hunt. That said the prices were all down, 40-50% of what might traditionally be expected so picking up a completed bike will put you dollars ahead in the end.
I expect in 3-5 years things will trend up again as the younger guys coming in develop tastes for older bikes. Right now the late 70's and into 80's are doing the best. Our job is to get the youngsters interested in mechanical things overall.

Thx guys. Yes, a completed bike makes more sense. But for me, the restoration is the fun part.  And yes I’ve been looking in the UK I’ve imported a few bikes.  The exchange rate isn’t the best and I’m concerned about any tariffs…..

This one seems to good to be true, a Rapide for £6,750.  A Google reverse image search doesn't show up the same images elsewhere, but it still looks suspicious to me.
This is one of the selling sites over here in the UK.

It's true that prices here in the UK have dropped right through the floor. But  I can't believe in the £6750 one.  If it seems far  too good to be true and if  .....
Unless it really is a project project.- ie a box of bits and who's going to count them.

Car and Classic is a good site but it is just a sales site so you still need to be wary.  I'd say £10,000-£12,000  for a Comet and £25,000 for a twin would be the bottom end or starting price.  If you want a 'matching numbers' bike they are of course more.  The fanatics want matching upper frame number, engine number,  and rear frame number (the swinging arm rear triangle).

If I was a kid again I would just buy a sound well engineered  bike from a known Vincent lover and owner, taking club advice and not worry about numbers. In the old days, many Vincent fanatics  had several machines and engines and would mix and match to get a bike on the road..

Since the classic bikes are just losing money now, I would not pay the extra for a matching numbers machine. For a rider's bike I would just want something well engineered and maintained with the right work done on it by the known experts, like Maughans for cranks.

Shadows cost more but I wouldn't spend more on one unless it had a really convincing history. In my opinion the bikes are only as good as their last rebuild, so there is no certainty that any particular  Shadow is better than a Rapide now.  I've had two Rapides - a B and a C - and prefer the alloy finish engine. I never wished that they were quicker! Some people think the Series B Rapide is the purest expression of Phillip Vincent and Phil Irving's design ideas.

If you do want an honest matching numbers machine you have to join the Vincent Owners Club. The machine registrar Simon Dinsdale is extremely helpful and the club  alone has the  confidential list of crankcase pairing numbers which confirm the actual formal stamped engine number. Note the frame numbers and engine numbers were  not identical from new.

The club also knows the individual history of countless bikes.

Verralls Motorcycles in Sussex have a nice Comet single for £17,000.  Ian Hatton, who runs it, is an excellent guy and knowledgeable.  You could always ask him to look out for a bike to the spec you want,

Andrew
