Dear experts,

I needed very suddenly to generate pages of Gregorian score (which I had never done before) and use them in Indesign. The writing of gabc went very well with the help of the "Source & Summit" editor. However: the exported vectors (.svg) make all Adobe apps crash when I try to open them inside one of those.

Any ideas, anyone?
This threatens to act as a sort of Grinch on my Christmas liturgy.

Sincerely,

Fr. Hugo

Hello Father,

I have also found that SVGs generated by S&S editor, as well as Gregobase, do not play well with Adobe Illustrator.
And in any case, Photoshop and Indesign, while they are able to open /some/ SVGs, should best be left out in favor of Illustrator - a vector object can then simply be copied and pasted from Illustrator to Photoshop and Indesign.

I think there is no fix to this problem. However, there are several workarounds :
- the best and hardest way : generate a PDF using Gregorio on your own computer, along with a LuaLaTeX distribution (see https://gregorio-project.github.io/introduction-editor.html for a starting point), and then open it directly in Indesign.
- the easy but limited way : switch online "editors" (S&S & co. should more aptly be called "previewers" because GABC is really meant to be compiled and not rendered on the fly) in favor of Chant Tools : https://bbloomf.github.io/jgabc/transcriber.html (click "show integrated GABC" and paste your code) ; then "Download SVG". Chant tools is not as feature-rich as S&S (they are both works of the same person, all hail Benjamin Bloomfield) so this will work for basic stuff but not for the rarer note shapes and other complex GABC features.
- the easy but ugly way : export PNGs from S&S / Gregobase / Chant Tools, and work with PNGs in the Adobe Suite.

Matthias Bry

svg export is a feature of the S&S editor, not of Gregorio. Gregorio is designed to produce pdf output using Lua(La)TeX. The conversion to svg is a separate step and one we don’t have any control over. You’ll need to get in touch with the editor’s development team to talk to them about how they produce the svg output and why you’re getting malformed svg (as far as Adobe is concerned, at least).

Dear experts,

Thank you for your kind help, I guess I'll have to do it the hard and  thorough way. I installed Tex live and am now facing what probably will be quite a challenging learning curve. Any tips on how to go about it? I worked through the basic tutorial, but that only resulted in a nice folder like the included image. Is there a site somewhere called texforclericalidiots.org or something?
Best wishes,

Fr. Hugo

Hello everyone,

Since this is more about setting up Lua(La)Tex than Gregorio support, I intend to continue this conversation privately with Fr. Hugo.

Hello Father, if you are interested in a debugging phone call, answer (only to my email address) with a phone number and a time (and a time zone possibly).
