Issues with test.tex

Hello, 

I have been following the tutorials posted on the Gregorio official website. 

When I make my directory, I am able to make my example.gabc file just fine. 

I make the test.tex file and place it in the same directory, yet when I go to compile it I am met with an error 

system commands enabled.

! I can't find file ` test.tex'.

Please help.

I have Windows 10, 

I installed TeXlive 2025 as a CTAN mirror, 

I installed Gregorio 6.1 from the download sections on the Git.hub page listed on the official Gregorio website. 

I follow the tutorials when making a “.gabc” file and then I create the separate “test.tex” file. 

For compiling, I have tried two methods, both listen in the tutorials sections: 

Compiling from the .gabc file where I add the “root: test.tex” line of code at the top of the file and then click the green “typeset” button. 

I have also tried compiling from the “test.tex” file using the instructions listed in the tutorial. 

Both are met with the program saying it cannot find the “test.tex” file despite being in the same directory as the .gabc one.

If you installed TeX Live 2025 with the full scheme, then Gregorio 6.1 was already installed, and there’s no need to do the second install (not that it’ll hurt anything, just that you’ll have to do all updates manually as the second install will be preferred to the TeX Live installed version, even in subsequent years).

What editor are you using? It sounds to me like this might be an editor configuration issue.

I did not know that on the Gregorio install portion, thank you for the clarification!

I am using Texworks as my editor. I configured it according to the tutorial by adding the LuaLatex “shell escape” command line, with the three different arguments under its configuration.

1) post a screenshot of the configuration with the three arguments; 

2) check that lualatex is selected, and that lualatex.exe is present in the directory at the top of the "path to tex" list;

3) paste the entire contents of the output console ?

So, the first thing that jumps out at me is that you’ve got two extensions on your gabc file: .gabc.tex. Please remove the .tex extension as that will mess things up when things get going.

Second, the header should be “name” not “\name” (no backslash).

Third, instead of invoking LuaLaTeX+se from the gabc file, have you tried invoking it from text.tex?

When saving my example.gabc score, how do I remove the ".tex" extension from the end of it. 

I watched a video on this and for some other users there appears to be a ".gabc" extension already present in their file types, however for me it does not appear.

In the file explorer, hit the three dots next to "View", "Options", "View" tab, uncheck "Hide extensions of known file types".

Then, you will see the file as "example.gabc.tex". Rename it as "example.gabc". It will prompt for confirmation.

Select “All files” from that drop down menu and explicitly write the gabc extension in the filename yourself.

Also make sure any “Automatically add file extension” options are off.

Of course, since you’ve already created the file, the easiest thing to do is to rename it in Windows Explorer (note, the file cannot be open in TeXworks while you do this). You can Google how to do this. At least for me Google AI gives some reasonable instructions and a link to a video.

I believe that removing the ".tex" extension from the "example" file worked. 

I also tried invoking LuaLateX+se from the ".tex" file, yet I still received the same error message.

Actually, all I need help on now is maybe a tip or two on how to organize all of the external files that were automatically downloaded to my "example" directory when compiling.

Files ending in .aux, .gaux, .log, .glog, .syntex.gz, are generated by the compilation process in the same directory as your tex file, and you can't move them elsewhere (well... it depends on things but you mostly can't).

For large projects I recommend using the subfile package and one or several dedicated directories for GABC files. See https://github.com/nocturnale-Romanum/nocturnale-romanum/

I learned from Matthias so I copy this (and it causes me issues but…)

Every directory for various projects has a scores, psalms if needed, and text folder (I mostly do the office, and I have rubrics, translations, etc. organized so that I don’t confuse them for a .tex file to be compiled). 

The problem that I mentioned is that multiple projects may use the same files. Or I put it in my local git repository. And a mistake in one is multiplied. Cross-file/directory search-and-replace tools in a text editor works to solve that.

For our purposes, you can add these auxiliary files to .gitignore if you use a git repository, but don’t set them to delete (this affects the chant as well as anything in normal LaTeX like cross-references). 

Also I don’t change anything in the default configuration for typesetting. Nor do I hit buttons. Every .tex file to be typeset begins with a magic comment (the specific format may be editor-dependent) that invokes LuaLaTeX + se and then latexmk (because the line height can change after an initial run, I need braces in the psalmody, index or page crossreferences etc.)
