At this very point of time, the subject observation - equating Maharashtrian pride/identity with Savarkar, regardless of how obnoxious it is, is, quite plausibly, aimed at isolating the Congress in Maharashtra politics and make it too embarrassing for the Shiv Sena to team up with the Congress too closely.

And, this comes, soon after Mamata, in Mumbai, having a pow-wow with the Maratha strongman and announcing the demise of the UPA - even if she's no part of it.
Pawar's occasional hobnobbing with the BJP and offers of crucial formal support to it are too well-known.
