This is the mail I just sent to Drue Neuhaus, the project lead, in response to the project update quoted below.

=====
Hi Drue.

Thank you for the update on the 1st Ave NE shared-use path project.

I have one major concern about it. As you may be able to guess, it is about the omission of improvement between NE 120th and NE 117th.

NE 117th is the direct route to the freeway overpass that connects Haller Lake and Pinehurst, and serves as a relatively safe east-west cycling route. Leaving the portion of 1st Ave NE between NE 117th and NE 120th unchanged will not help make it easier or safer for people to cycle from NE 117th northbound. That'd be quite disappointing, especially when NE 120th is a designated Neighbourhood Greenway.

This is just one voice, but I really hope there will be others like me who want you to have the improvement between NE 117th and NE 120th back on the table.

Sincerely,
Dai

Hi Neighbors,

Thank you to everyone who stopped by one of our tabling events or sent in your questions or comments over the last year. It was helpful to hear about your priorities for the area and how we can support safer connections around the neighborhood.

In the time between our last meeting, we have made some changes to the scope and schedule for the project. We’ve adjusted the project limits and added new improvements that will make it safer to get around. We also plan to build the shared-use path in 2 phases to support connections to Sound Transit’s upcoming Pinehurst Station and Northacres Park sooner. Read below for more details on scope changes and the new schedule.

We plan to have an open house in May and will share more details soon. During the open house we’ll have detailed maps that will help show the shared-use path’s location, particularly in relation to east side homes. In the meantime, please let us know if you have any questions or comments and check out our Frequently Asked Questions.

Changes to the project scope

  • Project limits: The path will now go from NE 130th St to NE 120th St instead of to NE 117th St. We will make additional crossing improvements at NE 120th St to connect to James Baldwin Elementary School, the existing sidewalk on the west side, and the Ashworth Ave N Neighborhood Greenway
  • Traffic calming: We heard that speeding is an issue along 1st Ave NE and will install speed cushions to help calm traffic
  • Lighting: We will install lights along the path to increase visibility and safety. The lights are designed to focus light on the path and minimize lighting on adjacent properties.

Changes to the project schedule

We’re building the project in 2 phases so that we can make some improvements in late 2025 to support access to the upcoming Pinehurst light rail station, connect to the NE 128th St Walkway, and make it easier and safer to get to Northacres Park.

Phase 1: In late 2025, we’ll build the section of the shared-use path between NE 130th St and NE 125th St in front of Northacres Park which includes:

  • A new crosswalk at N 128th St for access to Northacres Park and the NE 128th St Walkway
  • An all-way stop at the intersection of 1st Ave NE and NE 120th St
  • New ADA curb ramps (in select locations)
  • Improvements to the 1st Ave NE and NE 130th St intersection to make it easier and safer to get to the upcoming Pinehurst Station

Phase 2: In 2026, we’ll build the section of the shared-use path between NE 125th St and NE 120th St as originally planned, which includes:

  • Raised crossing at NE 125 St to keep people walking, biking, rolling, and scooting at path level
  • Speed cushions to calm traffic
Map showing the project limits on 1st Ave NE and phases. Phase 1 is from NE 130th St to NE 125th St. Phase 2 is from NE 125th St to NE 120th St

Thank You!

We’ll share details on the May open house soon and look forward to seeing you there. Please let us know if you have any questions or comments in the meantime.

Best,

Drue Nyenhuis

Thanks for forwarding this. I agree, that's a very significant change. I sent a note to Drue as well.
