Subject: Developing Sinkhole Re: Should anyone be surprised? Re: Hole in Dayton Ave N. Look out Kids!
CAUTION: External EmailI question whether that's due to a broken culvert (which would imply it's one of the culverts that carries a watercourse under the road - there are none nearby). There are only 2 utilities shown on the city's SPU website at that location:
A waterline runs under the east side of the road (you can see where from the maintenance hole at 122th - the line runs straight under Dayton from thereA sewer line (combined sanitary and storm sewer) runs slightly west of the centerline of the road (you can see where from the maintenance hole at 122th and another at midblock- the line runs straight under Dayton from there.
And of course, each house along the road has both a house water line and a side sewer connecting to the mains.
My speculation is that it's a leak from any of the above (the water or sewer main or a house's water or sewer connection) that's carving out a void under the road. The void will keep getting larger until the appropriate pipe is fixed regardless of what is done at the road surface. Those can require a fair amount of work when caught early (like now), but those sorts of voids keep growing until a sinkhole develops if not attended to.
I've added the chair and vice chair of Council's Transportation & Utilities Committee to this thread.

Look out Kids!In so many words ‘yes we have’ and that was SPU who did the repair job, removed the cones and left it in a precarious condition. Today SPU generated a new work order - put sand bags in as a temp measure. They’ve noted there is a broken culvert underneath the road. Let’s hope they will repair that ‘underlying problem’ before the serious rains hit.
