So, today - after a many years with graze/newsrob as my main rss reader, I uninstalled it and replaced it with News+ (plus the newsrob plugin).

Would just like to say thanks to Mariano and Travis for awesome work on this, but it was finally time to move along to an app which is more actively supported - and News+ seems the one that has the equivalent offline reader features to graze....

Cheers all!

Hi, Mark,

It does not look bad, and I will try it out. But "more actively supported"? The version in the Play Store is from Jan 2015, same as last commit to GitHub. Grazerss was updated in May 2016.

I didn't reply before as I thought Mark's message sounded like he was already gone. But perhaps I should anyway. While I would like everyone to stick around, it's certainly true that I haven't changed things much lately. There have been little fixes and a couple features, but it's not unreasonable to say I'm not changing things much. That's in part due to real life, but more because every time I think of things like reworking the UI, I can't think of a better way to do it. What's there is fast, works well, and covers most things I want it to do. I find myself thinking of all sorts of "cool things", but then realize that it ruins the simplicity and speed I use the app for in the first place. There are lots of options for the rich media views and online stuff, I don't see much point in trying to compete in that area.

I have received a request I intend to get done soon, for accessibility. The user mentioned that some of the buttons don't output anything useful with screen reader software. It looks pretty simple to do, but will have no effect for most users. I'll have a look through the requests on github and see if I can't push a couple things in from there as well. If there are specific things that you would like to see, feel free to post here or in the requests on GitHub.

There are lots of great apps out there, and I don't feel bad if other apps take care of your needs better. I'll even welcome you back if you choose to return, I won't even charge you another $0 for the app! :)

I tried it out. Had to pay $1.50 for the newsblur plugin just to make it work.

I tried for a week. Giving up, I now have thousands more unread articles due to the overly complicated interface - I'd rather wait to be at my desktop than use the app.

Back to newsrob!  I mean ... Graze!

I must say I agree, the simplicity of the interface is a major plus of GrazeRSS for me and I can't see anything much that I need changed, still very happy with it!

To be fair, I suspect the fact that I get most of my news via Twitter now and only read articles in Graze maybe for a few minutes a month might be a big factor here. I'm on the borderline of cancelling my Newsblur subscription, I use it so rarely.

On the "more regularly maintained" point, whilst News+ hasn't been released since January last year, it was still having features added then. Graze hasn't really had any significant development (other than a couple of minor bugfixes) for years...

I installed News+, went to settings, saw "Offline reading (BETA)" and quickly uninstalled it. Offline is my reason to use Grazerss (London tube commutes would be so boring).

I agree with Travis, not much to change here.

Mark, I'm curious - what development / new features would you like to see that GrazeRSS is lacking?  Many of us on this thread feel that there isn't much needed featurewise or development wise - but it sounds as though there is a feature you're looking for that isn't being provided.

Or...I'm completely misinterpreting and I'll go back to my corner and read my news posts.  :D

IIRC there is a problem with larger fonts, either as selected in the app, or as selected as system default, in that the larger fonts are not applied cleanly thru the app, and things like article text don't get appropriately magnified.

Another irritant is that articles such as from theregister.co.uk seem the be in a unnecessarily huge font, and are effectively unreadable, I suspect this is something to do with the markup from the site.  I think I've see it on some other sites too, but don't recall detail. I don't think it is worth putting a site specific filter, because maintaining that would potentially become unwieldy very soon, but hopefully you could see something more generic that works.

Nothing specific. That said, the UI could do with a complete overhaul to bring it up to modern Android UX standards. I believe that's something Travis was looking at, but I understand other priorities can take precedence.

Mainly, it's just about wanting shiny new stuff. 😂

[Committing a major faux-pas by resuscitating a thread that's been dead for years.  Public service announcement:  You're still subscribed to the grazerss group!  Congrats!]

So Android Pie reminded me of how I'm dependent on such a legacy app - barking a first-launch warning on opening GrazeRSS.   Google already won't let you publish a new app with such an old API ... and in November, they won't allow updates to existing apps.  So the version we have now is the last one (unless Travis is busy refactoring to oreo in private??)

It does have a few new issues in Pie - I often get black screens and have to kill the app and re-start.  (Which isn't as bad as it seems since graze is so lightweight).    My hunch is that this is due to the old behavior (from android ~2!!) where 'opening' was supposed to be different than 'resume'.  Mariano explained it to me a long time ago.

So ... What is the GrazeRSS community using these days?  Or has everyone given up on RSS ... and moved to Twitter (Mark...)  I've slightly kicked the tires of newsblur and newsjet recently, but they seem to fail my usecase.

I seem to have three critical needs from my RSS app:
* strong offline support  ... Reading on the subway / airplane use case ...  And as Mark knows, there's a further subset for train commuters ... "yes i have signal, but don't expect/require it to work"
* sync state to a web-based service for desktop reading.  I am happy with newsblur today - but would switch to another in a heartbeat to get the next point on my mobile app...
* A article state - beyond read/unread - 'keep unread' (blue in graze).

The last bullet is what all the other clients seem to miss.  Save/Star doesn't suffice - I want the 'keep unread' article to stay in the same context (folder/feed) when viewed elsewhere.

My workflow is something like:
* scroll through feeds (usually a folder at a time) and read the headlines
* for most of the items, Once I've read the headline/lead, I scroll by without opening (headline was enough)
* I open some -  most times I go back (read enough) ..  less often, I mark blue to save (want to read more).  And sometimes I mark blue just from the headline (must read more later).  The threshold is dependent on how much time I have right now...
* When I'm at the bottom of the list - or have to stop reading for some reason ...  I do 'Mark read from here'  - everything not-blue before that point is marked read.

This lets me keep up with lots of high-volume feeds ... i see every headline - and go deeper with some - either immediately, or later.  But when it's *later* (blue) they are still in the same context (folder/feed) not moved to star/saved/insta/pocket.

There are other ways to do something similar, but it doesn't look like the two I looked at (easily) allow it.  Mark-read-on-scroll combined with a way to flag an item as 'don't mark-read-on-scroll' would work.  As would being able to process a list of 'new unreads' vs 'seen unreads' - like IMAP where unread and new are different flags.

Would love to hear from others about their use case.

And I'd like to thank Mariano and Travis for creating and maintaining what has been one of the most critical pieces of technology I use for almost a decade!!!!!

Here am I! Still make my way among the ruins of the feed RSS realm (and of Google Group too, if it matters).
Thanks for sharing in detail your use case, Rod, because, well, it's exactly my own! The same needs, the same — simple, but ridiculously effective — solutions by GrazeRSS. So I'm waiting too for anyone who found alternative options somehow.
I'm stuck on Android 7, so I can guess I can rely on GrazeRSS at least for the next few years, namely until the next phone replacement — being careful at never ever uninstalling it!
Is a (however minimal) further development of GrazeRSS by someone an option still on the table?
   Thanks everybody!

Still here too!

My use is simple but Graze does it brilliantly - overnight sync of all feeds, in the morning mark blue all the stories I want to read, everything else then gets marked as read in one click. Work my way through items (often offline or in poor reception areas).

Would be gutted if Graze no longer worked in Pie (is all good on OP6 Oreo) - would be happy to try and support further development if that would help.

I stopped reading rss about a month after that last email. I didn't get on with News+, and ditched it too.

I now get all my stuff from twitter, saving long-form to Pocket. For my commute I've mostly stopped reading and now watch TV, using plex for offline sync. The News isn't much fun these days anyway.....

Agree re news! I solely use RSS for following travel/points blogs. Although they tweet the stories too I find there's a large volume of stories and only a few I'm interested in, Graze makes it much easier to sort the ones I'm interested in (and without any managed timeline a la Twitter).

Interesting points everyone, thank you for sharing them.

I honestly don't have anything "missing" for my uses. I do have a non-webview implementation of the Oauth flow since Google disabled it. I haven't posted it as it requires a higher API which breaks menu buttons. So I need to switch everything over to the new style. It's a fairly invasive change. I may have to drop the bar in favor of the built in controls.

One of my feeds, a local newspaper site, broke RSS a while back. Added an extra slash to the URL so you couldn't bring up the full page. I emailed them to report it. I got a reply asking how long I've been using the feed and how I found the link. They don't advertise it anymore on the site. They did fix it though, so that's something.

I haven't seen an error opening in the browser. I don't have Pie yet though. Can you get the exact error text or a logcat when it happens? I'll try to get Pie in an emulator to see if I can reproduce it that way as well.

Apart from the issue below re the long press menu is GrazeRSS working OK on Android Pie? I've just had the upgrade notification for my OnePlus 6 but wanted to check before updating!

Cheers

No issues here.  I got a notification shortly after upgrade that the app wasn't developed for Android Pie and I may see issues.  Nothing since that and no issues found.

I migrated to Pie and I'm also running into the same problem As Matthew, whew the app crashed everytime I choose to "show in the browser".

As Matthew, it happens only when I use it through press and hold. The menu seems fine.

Any possibility to updated the app so both would use the same method and the menu? My problem is that I turned my buttons off to gain screen space and use those functions through gestures. So no more menu for me.

As Rod, I find the app perfect and can't find any replacement.

Decio.

I'll look at the code and see if I can figure out what's different about the two ways to show in browser. Unfortunately, Google has little desire to maintain backward compatibility, so apps written in older styles have issues on newer versions of the OS. At this point, they won't even accept new versions on the play store as it's not updated enough for them. Use of the menu command needs to be removed entirely before I could submit a new version.

I've seen the error reports, but it looks like it might be as simple as launching the browser from the popup menu. Irritating.

Travis, the bug report I sent to you today might be close to the issue.

I don't think I've had graze send a bug report in years but somehow it crashed "just right" this time around.

And yes, you do need to refactor quite a bit to get Google to publish any updates. The app logic is perfect, it's just how you interact with Android for things like UI and task model from what I understand.  (I'm not an Android dev and I haven't looked into the code ... But the latter sounds like a painful change)

Thanks, if it´s easily fixed maybe you then send us the apk.

I have also tried some "modern" rss readers in the play store, but it's really frustrating to give up all grazerss flexibility just for a modern ui.

Decio,

Looks like that doesn't have whatever happened in 2.0.10 though (the version my APK claims to be) just through 2.0.9

Btw, on Android 10 I don't see the 3 dots to access the menu anymore. I completely lost access to the menus, settings etc.

Travis, are you able to specify the changes needed to port the code to the modern api?

I tried to fund a developer to do the port - ended up paying nothing - the guy was in over his head and couldn't deliver.

Having a detailed punch list of changes required to modernize the app would help.

I know there's some stuff around default activities, oauth and general authentication, not relying on the system menu icon, etc ...  but those are all layman descriptions (and I'm sure I am missing stuff).

Entirely willing to try again if I had a good job description that would separate the amateurs from the chaff.

My Pixel3 is reminding me to move to android 10 much more frequently and disruptively as I keep snoozing it ...

Oh no, I hadn't realised that Android 10 would break Graze! Just as well OnePlus are being a bit slow with releasing updates for the OP6! Still use the app multiple times a day, functionality excellent so very supportive of any efforts to keep it compatible.

And I can't find an alternative. Most readers do not download the web page when the feed is incomplete. I need this as I fly a lot and like to read my feeds while airborne.
For me that was the killer feature of Graze.
I tested several during the weekend, to no avail.
Is Graze dead? Is there anything we can do as a community?

The biggest thing holding everything up is the fact that Google has decided to remove menu support completely. That makes it impossible to access the menu on newer Android versions. The new way, is the little "hamburger" menu in the corner. I suspect that the existing action bar will also need to be updated to support the menu changes properly. It's likely way easier to just replace it with the stock version, now that there is one.

The authentication issues are easy enough to fix, you just have to stop using the WebView component for it. This is easy to make work. The newer method just loads Chrome to do it and gets the token that way. It also only works on newer versions that don't work with the menu stuff. So you have to do them together. They can be worked around using the direct sign in instead of OAuth though. I was less annoyed with this one as there is a legitimate security issue with the WebView on OAuth. It wouldn't really affect us, but a malicious app could exploit it, so they had to do it.

Ideally, Google would have provided a compatibility thing that would adapt the menu to a button or something to make it easier to convert. I am not aware of one though. I can't figure out why they care so much about the menu button. The compatibility one takes almost no space on the soft button bar.

I kept hearing that there were more "modern" looking alternatives that did the same stuff, so I was less inclined to take the time to mess with it. I also suspect that the web page download stuff is going to get more and more broken over time with the current trends in web development having more things script driven. Graze just downloads the HTML and images, so if the content is all script driven, it won't be able to download it. We were able to work around the worst ones with the mobilizers, but they all seem to be dead now too. Web people generally don't like people downloading pages for offline use, so they are actually likely to try to make it more difficult to do.

As for the modern UI style, meh. I actually prefer the simpler style. I guess if people really want the cards or whatever the new thing is now, it could be done.

I've seen the default activity thing. I'm not sure what the solution is for it. I suspect the code needs to be updated to set a different flag or whatever.

Thanks for this insight, Travis - how feasible do you think it would be to for you or someone else to take on this work? Perhaps we could have a mini-crowdfund?

I agree that the UI works really well as it is so I'd be all for just doing the minimum required to make it functional with modern Android!

Cheers

I'll take a look at it. I hadn't really taken much time as it didn't seem like it was really causing issues. However, with the newer Android being annoying, it might become a bigger issue.

I second that. Having download most of the remaining readers from time to time, and nothing comes even close to what what we have with GrazeRSS. But I will have to accept if Travis understand it not worth it anymore.

The only critical thing for me in 10 is that it crashes on open in browser or share link (the new activity flag bug).

While the menu is gone, I can long press on items - mark read until here works but share or browser crashes.   The rest of my workflow still works fine, e.g. mark read / blue , sync, repeat.

That said it can't set up accounts or do settings stuff anymore, so I'm benefiting from setting up in 9 then upgrading.

I'd be happy with
1. Fix the crashes on those two items
2. Moving accounts to the Google settings way
3. Add settings to the long-press menus

Even if it meant giving up "web/feed" view switching and mobilizers entirely.

Graze is valuable to me because I can process huge volumes of feed items - the vast majority (80%) I just read the headline or feed view and mark read.

About 10% I pin unread so I can read on the desktop later.

What's broken today is the other 10% - I want to share the URL with an app (email/messaging) - or open in browser now instead of later at my desk.

And of course the dread that I can never set it up or install it again and I'm stuck with this phone for the rest of my life 😛
