Hi all,

We have taken note that a significant number of users will not or cannot upgrade to Grails 3.0 until some key plugins are upgraded.

With that in mind I would like feedback from the community about which plugins you would like to see migrated to Grails 3.0 so we can begin prioritising work in this area.

So please let us know which plugins are important and whose absence are preventing you from exploring upgrading to Grails 3.0

Thanks for your attention.

Cheers

My suggestions:

spring-security-core

twitter-bootstrap

joda-time

remote-control

Thanks,

I would love to see:

+ spring-security-core

+ DB-Migration

Those two are quite essential for our teams

Have you tested: https://bintray.com/yamkazu/plugins/org.grails.plugins%3Adatabase-migration/view

It is a Grails 3.0 version of the database migration plugin

Hi all,

+ wkhtmltopdf
+ cookie-session
+ mandrill
+html-cleaner
+ spring-security-ui (and all spring security core sub plugins)
+ jaxrs
+ cache-ehcache
+ webxml

I know there are some old ones but they still are still used on my production system

Is webxml keeping you from upgrading to Grails 3?

Good idea!

In our case, we try to use the minimum number of plugins but these are essential for us :

spring-security-cas (critical)
spring-security-ldap (critical)
grails-melody (not critical)
cache (done)
quartz (done)

I'm sure that Burt is working hard to finish the spring security plugin 2.0, but as I told him is critical to jump to grails 3 in our organization

PS: I want to say that the bintray site is great but the plugin presentations lack a lot of the previous site information that is useful and give some confidence when we are looking for a new plugin

Thanks in advance,

Yeah, I agree, but I think the real problem is that the ReadMe for a lot of the projects is lacking real content and walk through of how the plugins work. Which is mainly a problem with those that ported it, i guess.

seeing spring-security(-xyz) mentioned frequently in this topic, maybe a
viable approach for grails-3 successors of the spring-security plugins
would be a mixture of codegen scripts generating spring "java" config
and artifacts like domain classes/controllers and then just providing
the "glue"/"helpers" (taglib/service/utils etc.)?

regarding the codegen, migrating grails-spring-websocket to grails-3, i
took a similar approach (a very simple example) with
https://github.com/zyro23/grails-spring-websocket/blob/master/src/main/scripts/CreateWebSocketConfig.groovy

i wanted to stay as close as possible to how you would use it in
spring(-boot) to keep the flexibility of using your own "java" config.
(and to be able to point to the ref docs ;))

btw: the current bean definition loading order/precedence should still
allow groovy dsl defined beans to override those from "java" configs.

My plugin relied heavily on spring-plugin-core and as I'm converting to  grails-3/spring-boot, I took a more distributed architecture approach and realized that I should be passing a TOKEN instead as authentication/authorization can be 'edge functionality' which is handled at the PROXY as well as in the application.

By handling with a token, we can pass across the architecture... something I would suggest more people look into while they are waiting on spring-security-core. You can already integrate a solution quite easily with Stormpath for OAUTH.

Something to think about anyway.

spring-security-core is what prevent us the most from upgrading. We have a custom plugin that builds on top of spring-security-core, which we use in most of our 20-30 applications.

Our must-have-list (some of which are already Grails3-ready):

spring-security-core
spring-security-ldap
cache
cache-ehcache
quartz
routing
routing-jms
mail
console (not really a blocker, but hard to live without)

Now that java.time exists and because of time types are used in any application of any size, I suggest there should be a native, in other words, a core plugin for this instead of being depending of Joda-Time be upgraded.

Giving me a reply to myself. After digging a while, I have concluded that an all round support for types in java.time packages ( tag libraries in web pages, controllers and databases) is on development still. So, sadly, because of the heavy use of time types in my application under development; I have to fall back to a safe place, that is, grails 2.3.11, java 1.7 and joda-time.

Graeme,

Please, include Grails constraints plugin (https://grails.org/plugin/constraints) in the list. I found it essential to write custom validators which is, I believe, important part of any application.
I didn't dig into grails 3 yet, so if there is similar functionality available, please ignore this message.

Tnx.

Hi Graeme, Jeff, et. al.

Hope you're enjoying your new "home" in OCI. We're eager to migrate a few applications to Grails 3 but there are a few plugins which are preventing us from doing so at the moment. In order of importance:
  • spring-security-core
  • spring-security-acl
  • spring-security-ldap
  • audit-logging
  • quartz (already migrated?)
  • mail (already migrated?)
  • asynchronous-mail
If I manage to find any "free time" I'd be happy to help with the migration effort.

There are a lot of plugins (like PayPalpro) that I use for some sites, but are no longer actively maintained.  It would be great to see if we could pull those into GitHub and allow volunteers to upgrade them.  I had to move to 2.5 and have had enough issues with the 2.4 issues (Config Holder deprecation). My big blocker on 3.0 is the wonky IntelliJ support.  I have tried a small project in 3.0, but it is still too much hassle to be worth it for me.

You don't need a plugin to use Rest Client Builder in Grails 3.  All you need to do is add this to your build.gradle file:

    compile('org.grails:grails-datastore-rest-client:4.0.0.RELEASE') {
        exclude group: 'javax.servlet', module: 'javax.servlet-api'
        exclude group: 'commons-codec', module: 'commons-codec'
        exclude group: 'org.grails', module: 'grails-plugin-converters'
        exclude group: 'org.grails', module: 'grails-core'
        exclude group: 'org.grails', module: 'grails-web'
    }

I don’t know where the latest source code is, but there is source at https://github.com/pedjak/grails-csv and there is source in the published plugin.

Have you reached out to Les or Stefan and asked them directly?

That may be the case. I was just clarifying that the plugin was in bintray. I will look at it tonight and maybe get another milestone published with the latest code.

Hi,

Responding to this particular message in this thread because the previous poster included the wkhtmltopdf plugin in his wish list.
The original creator of wkhtmltopdf plugin has moved on, but I have taken over the plugin and released a couple of bugfix releases.
Finally got the time to look into migration to Grails 3.
A first version has been pushed to master at https://github.com/rlovtangen/grails-wkhtmltopdf. (Grails 2.x compatible version is now in branch ‘grails2’.)
Nothing published to Bintray yet, though.

One problem I ran into, was that the code replaced the render method with its own version that added pdf support. The way this was done does not seem to work in Grails 3. I guess the reason is that the render method on controllers is now added by a trait (grails.artefact.controller.support.ResponseRenderer).
This is how the render method was replaced by the plugin in previous versions:

controllerClass.metaClass.render = { Map params ->
    ...
}

If anyone knows how I can achieve the same for methods added by traits, feel free to send me a hint. Haven’t really dived into the problem yet.
Because of this, I temporarily added a renderPdf method on controllers instead, so for now you have to call renderPdf instead of render.

Best Regards,
Ronny

Hi Graeme,

Was trying to get a feel for what folks are asking for, just curious how you are tracking the responses here?

Would it make sense to also request these in Github?  But under which project? Grails-Core: Plugins (https://github.com/grails/grails-core/issues?q=is%3Aopen+is%3Aissue+label%3APlugins)?

If you don't mind a suggestion that I've seen work really well and you probably already know about it,  Trello, the Brackets guys use it and it's quite helpful for these kinds of community feedback: https://trello.com/b/LCDud1Nd/brackets

Hi Graeme,

Thanks, works like a charm!
Much better solution than adding method dynamically in doWithDynamicMethods.
The @Enhances annotation is new in 3.0.3? http://grails.github.io/grails-doc/latest/guide/plugins.html#addingMethodsAtCompileTime talks about implementing a TraitInjector, but this is so much nicer.

Hi Graeme,

We are unable to download the Jquery Grails3 compatible plugin and JAWR Grails 3 plugin.
It has become a stumbling block for us to proceed further in migrating to Grails 3 application from Garils2.
Do we have to upgrade manually or can we manage to migrate the Grails 3 application without using the Jquery and JAWR Grails3 plugins.

There are some things I'd like to improve on, including better yaml configuration. I've learned a bit during the update of the jaxrs plugin and I'd like to tidy the rabbit one up too.

Some of us tried to upgrade our projects and supplied documentation and even fixed bugs we had but were told we have to have tests before even releasing a BETA of an upgrade. I myself asked for a path to 'submission acceptance' but received no response.

It was pointed out that MULTIPLE projects do NOT have tests and repeatedly are added as even 1.0 (and still are).

There appears to be a double standard... which is why alot of people are no longer upgrading I suspect.

A simple question of a 'path to submission acceptance' and having it applied evenly to all should the norm... not the acception on an individual by individual basis.

Hi Graeme,
Thanks for posting this.
It will be good to migrate Jasper and Executor. We tried to migrate the jasper plugin to grails 3.1 by following the documentation. We were able to compile it and run the integration tests but run into issues during runtime.

With the Executor plugin, it appears that it was written in a very old version of grails.
I would like to help with any migration efforts.

Thanks,

Now we have a new project and we want to use Grails 3.xx but i can not build it because of the plugins
What are we going to do ?

These are the plugins that we use :

runtime ":database-migration:1.3.8"
runtime ":jquery:1.11.0.2"
runtime ":resources:1.2.7"

compile ':spring-security-core:2.0-RC2'
compile ':spring-security-ldap:2.0-RC2'
compile ':spring-security-acl:2.0-RC1'
compile ':jasper:1.8.0'

compile ":searchable:0.6.5"
compile ":quartz:1.0.1"
compile ":famfamfam:1.0.1"
compile ":dojo:1.7.2.0"

Is Grails 2.xx is going to supported in the future ?

Several of those plugins have Grails 3 counterparts including database-migration, spring-security-core, spring-security-ldap, spring-security-acl and quartz. resources has long been deprecated in favor of asset-pipeline. I don’t think the famfamfam plugin does anything particularly useful aside from adding a dependency on the icons so it isn’t really needed. I think the same is true of dojo and jquery. elasticsearch is the successor to searchable.

>
> Is Grails 2.xx is going to supported in the future ?

Yes. At OCI we still have ongoing support contracts to support 2.x and continue to offer those support contracts to new customers. That said, 2.x is in maintenance mode meaning the only real work we are doing there is for support customers and potentially to address any serious security concerns that might be identified in the future. All of our innovation efforts are directed to 3.x at this point.

Hi Jeff,
One of the immediate concerns we have with continuing to use Grails 2.3.x is the security vulnerability found in groovy 1.7.0-2.4.3 http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2015-3253

Is it possible to use groovy 2.4.4 with Grails 2.3.x? We are debating if its worth migrating to Grails 2.4.x first and then another hop to 3.x

Thanks,

Look into the details of that issue and you will see that unless you are doing some things that almost no web application should be doing, that vulnerability is generally not exploitable by a user of a Grails app.

Thank you very much for export plugin compatible with grails >3.0

I found documents of the export plugin V2.0.0 here: http://puneetbehl.github.io/grails-export/docs/index.html

Easygrid plugin
People like me, searching for new frameworks are used to be grids.
Wavemaker makes it visually, just like Delphi in the past: http://dev.wavemaker.com/wiki/bin/wmdoc_6.6/FormsTutorial
I don't expect a WaveMaker like application, but I also don't want to to migrate my projects to OpenXava which seems another alternative to grails for me

Most of these questions would be better asked on Stack Overflow as this is the discussion group for the development of Grails. With that said, the export plugin is on bintray:

You will probably have to do a quick test to see if there are any incompatibilities with Grails 3.1.x but version 2.0.0 of the plugin appears to be Grails 3.x compatible.

You can edit that page by authenticating to the site and then visiting
https://grails.org/plugin/edit/fixtures, but that probably isn’t what
you want to do as that page is for the Grails 2 plugin.  You could
edit the text to include a link to the Grails 3 page if you like.

If you have your bintray repo linked to the main one then your plugin
would show up in the Grails 3 plugin portal which is at
https://grails.org/plugins.html.

I'm trying to upgrade my projects from Grails 2.5.4 to Grails 3.1.10 but I'm missing the following plugins:
easygrid
rest-client-builder
json-exclusion-marshaller
jquery

I don’t know what functionality the easygrid and
json-excclusion-marshallar plugins provided but rest-client-builder
and jquery plugins are no longer needed.
