I created a text item containing a short narrative. When I make the book, the story contains some small boxes near some of the names. I looked at the original text item and it seems to be related to double quote marks. If I change the double quotes to single quotes, the boxes are gone. So I can’t use double quote marks in a text item?

Also, I underlined some places using the text editor. The underlining looks correct, but when I make the book the underlining skips the comma. Are these Calibre issues?

Virginia,

Regarding the comma/underline, I believe that is a font difference. The underline is under the comma, but the comma dsescends lower in the calibre screenshot and obscures the line.

Regarding the quotes, exactly how did you create them?

  1. Did you key them in the TextBox?
  2. Did you copy/paste them in the TextBox?
  3. Did you key them in the HTML Editor?
  4. Did you copy/paste them in the HTML Editor?

At first, I copied into the text box. After I saw the boxes in the book, I went back and typed the entry into the HTML editor. The boxes still appeared. As a test, I changed to single quotes, and that worked, but double quotes would be the correct usage.

This comment may be completely off the mark, but I was wondering if the question of Windows "smart quotes" versus "straight quotes" could be coming into play here?

Virginia,

  1. When you typed the quotes, how did you type them? I presume you were typing “curly” quotes, i.e., “”, and not straight quotes, ".
  2. Did you type them the same way when typing into the User Item textbox as you did when typing into the HTML Editor?

I am trying to understand exactly what you did, so I can repeat it.

I copied some text from a Memo in TMG and pasted it into a text box in GP. The double quotes were “curly” quotes. When I made the book, the boxes appeared. I then went into the HTML editor in GP and typed over the double quotes (making them straight quotes), saved, and made the book. The boxes were still there. I know I did a Save, because I retried overtyping and making the book several times. I always save before making a book, whether I need to or not. I learned the hard way.

I just went through this scenario again and the double quotes show up correctly, so I don’t know what happened earlier.
