Hello,

We want to migrate Gmail historical emails to Google Groups. We want to let end users do it by themselves.

We tested to let an admin (not super admin) to follow the steps and create GCP project and run the command.

We would like to ask, is the person who creates the GCP project must be a super admin? Or can end user also do it by themselves?

We saw a 403 page when we tried to authorize API accesses.

Thank you!

Ella

GYB is a command line tool and is generally geared towards admin and power users. End users are likely to struggle to use it.

Who can create a project in your GCP organization is determined by your GCP organization's configuration:

I have not tested recently but I think you need admin permissions to migrate email into a Google Group, end users won't be able to do it even if they are group owner. You'd need to test and confirm.

In general, I don't recommend this route, asking end users to manage mailbox migration sounds messy and prone to user error.

I'd suggest just migrating ALL of the email to the user's primary Gmail mailbox to make life easier for your end users (happy end users, happy IT admin)

Hi Jay,

thank you very much! Esp. you answered so quickly :D

I just tested with a colleague who has limited admin permission to restore emails to groups. It gave me error which indicates lack of permission. Hence the email in this group :P

I guess we either need to set up a server to migrate gmail emails to Groups, or run the commands on my laptop :( I already did that earlier this year, running GYB on my local machine to restore for 6 groups for 2 weeks..... a burden for my laptop and it sometimes timed out or had connection failure.

If new comers join the Google Group and there is no historical emails, they would ask......

Anyway, thanks for confirming my guess! I agree GYB is too complicated for end users.

Thank you!
