IIRC, Brian suggested something similar to this earlier and has been discussed multiple times for different reasons. I wanted to flesh out details and finalize the spec to get early feedback as I want this to be available sooner than later.

Spiffy.

Of my excitement, 20% of it is because I like this feature, and 80% of
it is because there is actually a public design doc before the CL hits
trunk. :-)

Really cool. I like the keyspace discussion, but don't have anything
specific to add.
