I know nothing about Jade, but if we can look at your resulting web page, we can tell what is going on and trace back to why that is happening in the Jade context.

The issue was cause as the container div was in a loop in my jade template, creating multiple containers with the same class name. Once I made sure there was only one class with the name, it worked.
