Google Sheets and Controls and Dashboards

I want to use as StringFilter from "Controls and Dashboards". The problem is, I don't know how connect to the Google Sheet I want to use. Almost everything else I've wanted to do with the charts I have managed to find a way of doing but what I'd like is a simple example of how to connect a Stringfilter to a Google Sheet that I can build on.

It seems I got myself confused. I had another look at this and I think it was the JSON methods that were described but which I didn't need.

I used the GID method of connecting to the spreadsheet - https://developers.google.com/chart/interactive/docs/spreadsheets to get the data

I needed several chart types, so used options from the various types at https://developers.google.com/chart/interactive/docs/gallery
Finally, I used the vanilla code from the Controls guide at https://developers.google.com/chart/interactive/docs/gallery/controls

It was trying to use dataSourceUrl that was causing me problems, that and I think it needs the Google sheet published to the web which is something I didn't know. for what I want it for, the GID method of getting the data works fine.
