You are not doing anything wrong. The ability to list/create/delete databases is one of the things we don't have yet for the second generation of Cloud SQL instances. Sorry for the inconvenience. :-(

I created a 2nd gen instance, and then imported two databases.  
They were imported successfully according to the activities log.
I am not able to see them and I do not see a databases tab to see what databases are on that instance. 
It appears that the storage size did increase so I presume they were imported?
What am I doing wrong?

The mysql client should work fine. How exactly are you trying to connect?
