I have a configured WIndows 2016 VM instance in GCE and would like to install MS SQL Server on it but I'm yet to see any way to do that. What I have seen so far, is to create another instance with SQL Server running in it which is clearly not what I want.

Hello,

As per documentation, If you need to run SQL Server on Compute Engine, create an instance with a Windows Server image that includes SQL Server preinstalled. Compute engine offer images that include SQL server are already installed on windows.

I already have a windows instance with the app I need to connect the SQL Server with. Is it possible to install a SQL server image in an existing instance?

Hello Hassan,

Using two images at the same time on one instance is not possible (can not run two operating systems at the same time unless if you are nesting them, and that is not currently available for Windows) Thus, adding the image that contains the MS SQL server won't work with your existing Windows image.

You have two options:

1. Install Microsoft SQL server (application) on the existing server that includes the application like the instructions in this Microsoft guide. But I am not sure if the version mismatch would be an issue. However, that requires applying a license (if you have one) through Microsoft License Mobility per this document.

2. Create a new Microsoft SQL server instance from one of the offered images that we have, and migrate your application instead, and delete the current one. (could be an easier option)
