Error when running gam update mobile on Unregistered device

Hey there, hope all is well. I'm mostly reaching out to confirm if this is considered normal behavior, or if something is wrong. I have a script that runs the following command to wipe the byod mobile device for the queried user, if any exist.

"gam update mobile query "email:$Terminated_User_Email owner:byod" action admin_account_wipe doit"

However, I noticed the following error when running it on a specific account:

"Getting all Mobile Devices that match query (email:test...@domain.com owner:byod), may take some time on a large Google Workspace Account...
Got 1 Mobile Device...

ERROR: Not Authorized to access this resource/api

ERROR: Reauthentication is needed, please run

gam oauth create"

I checked my scopes and confirmed I have the "[*] 35)  Directory API - Mobile Devices Directory (supports readonly and action)" scope. I also updated gam to the current version, but I'm still getting this error. The only thing I noticed after investigating this is that this particular user's device that was found had "Status: DEPROVISIONED" Does gam fail to wipe an account that has this status? And is this considered normal?
