I'm attempting to run gam user us...@domain.com add sendas us...@domain2.com "User Name" default, with the us...@domain2.com as an alias already, and the command fails.

Temporary error: internalError - Internal error encountered., Backing off: 60 seconds, Retry: 9/10
ERROR: 500: internalError - Internal error encountered.

If I run gam user us...@domain.com add sendas userfir...@domain2.com "User Name" default while userfir...@domain2.com is also an alias, it works. It's happening for several accounts. Is there a place I can check what the error is?

Send me a private Meet/Zoom invitation and we'll investigate.

From support logs we can see that it looks like a timeout issue (DEADLINE_EXCEEDED) on the sent_label_retroactive=true flag actions. Looks like the number of sent messages may be causing a high workload to the backend and the /MailboxService.CreateSendAs might experience the DEADLINE_EXCEEDED because of this. Have you seen that before and is there way around that?

Mark, I wonder if your issue is related to my problem?

I had to create an issue about it here.

When the SendAs address doesn't exist as a real user account, I wasn't able to create SendAs via API.

I can create SendAs for such addresses without issue inside the Gmail interface.

Hey Kim,
Yeah, that was my first thought, but we verified that the addresses existed as aliases already, AND that the sendas command worked for other aliases configured the same way for the same user.
I think what happened was this:
- New account that had a lot of legacy data migrated from M365.
- The sendas command has an API flag to retroactively apply the sent label to all messages with the new sendas as a from address.
- Normally, this isn't a lot of mail and it can loop through any existing messages pretty quickly and apply the label.
- Because this was migrated, there were thousands of messages that needed to have the sent label applied, so it timed out on that piece.
- Google appears to have now rolled out a fix that allows this to complete without erroring out.

Mark,

Where do you see this in the API documentation?
- The sendas command has an API flag to retroactively apply the sent label to all messages with the new sendas as a from address.

Ah, looks like that's my confusion. I think the flag is on the backend, not on the public API.
