Display Names

This is new in 2024, so old solutions do not work.  If I add a non-google member to a group, I can no longer direct add, I must send an invitation.

If that wasn't bad enough, the display name comes through as the email address--even for gmail users who are invited.  This makes the managing of members awkward.

Any work-around for Google's latest "improvement"?

On this one I think that once in a while google is right...if this was allowed, it would make it really easy for spammers to use a trusted google domain to spam people via Google Groups and the worse part would be that those emails will come in completely verified and trusted because it would bypass any of the security checks within Gmail

The only "direct-add" I'm aware of that does not send either an invitation or a notification of group addition is via GAM, as a super admin. I ran into the issue at least a few years ago where we realized non-domain addresses couldn't be added silently from the Groups web interface. (With good reason; as Andrea mentioned above.) 

Adding via GAM doesn't help with issue of the display name being the email address for non-domain members. 

I use GAMADV-XTD3 6.68.04:
gam update group <groupname> add member <email address>
