Update Users Profile Images

Hi,

I saw an archived post about using GAM to update multiple users profile images to the same image. 

Is this still possible to do? And, would this work if some users have an image already and others do not?

Tamoor,

You can certainly use the same image for multiple users; if you update a user's photo, the new photo replaces the old photo.

Hi Ross,

Thanks for your reply.

I meant is there a quick way to do this via GAM rather than individually going through each user via the Google Workspace admin page? I would like to update our student users to use the same profile image.

gam ou /Students update photo student.jpg

Use ou_and_children /Student is there are sub OUs under /Student.

Hi Ross,

Thank you. That seems to have worked.

I just had two quick follow up questions.
  • Is GAM able to interact/update suspended accounts?
  • During the process of running the update command on several OU's, I received an ERROR: 400: Invalid Input: photoData - invalid message. Although no users were skipped, do you know why this might be?

Hi Ross,

For the bulk upload of the profile image, our suspended accounts were not updated with this new image, only active accounts were.

I am currently running GAM version 6.31.

6.31 is very old, 6.58 is current.

The photo was updated, Google doesn't show the photo for suspended users.

Hi Ross,

Thanks for letting me know.

I will update to the latest version and see if the issue appears again when I run the update command.

By the way, is it possible to run the update command on a whole OU, but specify not to update the profile image of users who have already added their own one.

Get list of users with no photo set

gam config csv_output_row_filter "thumbnailPhotoUrl:regex:^$" redirect csv ./NoPhoto.csv ou /Students print users photourl

gam csv NoPhoto.csv gam user "~primaryEmail" update photo student.jpg
