to GAM for Google Workspace
Hey all, wondering if anyone might have had a similar task to do. We purchased another company and migrated their Google tenant to ours. Was pretty painful. Because the domains were still separate, and I am using GCDS on the original domain, the purchased company emails and groups were created via GAM, and then the domains were added as exceptions in  GCDS (I know, I know...). Subsequent additions and updates were done manually through the Google admin console.

Now ready to get everything back into GCDS. Current task is to get the manually created groups into AD. Used GAM to get groups and members for the domain:

gam print groups domain othercompany.com members todrive

Not a GAM thing, but noticed that quite a large number of members are represented as an alias, rather than their primary email. The purchased company has several subdomains, from prior acquisitions and such. This is making it difficult for me to match up into AD.

Short story long, if anyone has an experience like this, would be grateful for some insight or possible solution. Thanks!

Has anyone responded to this yet? Not that I have the solution, but I'm absolutely fascinated by the problem and really want to know how this was resolved (if it was). Calling on the giants in this group to help! Thanks y'all!

Dawit,

email: The member's email address. A member can be a user or another group. This property is required when adding a member to a group. The email must be unique and cannot be an alias of another group. If the email address is changed, the API automatically reflects the email address changes.
id: The unique ID of the group member. A member id can be used as a member request URI's memberKey.

The id is immutable, so when a user's primary email address changes, the id doesn't. Google returns the immutable id and whatever primary email address is associated with it at the time you ask for the membership:

For one of the entries you see that is represented by an alias do:
gam info user id:<PutIDHere> primaryemail aliases

What do you see?

Ross

Hi Ross,

Thanks for the response. I hope your recommendation has helped Michael. I ran the GAM command above and I can see the user as well as the details of the primary/alias addresses.

So, will there be a way for someone in Michael's situation to run a gam command to show only the primary emails of all users in a given domain? I'm assuming once that is generated, he can proceed with the migration.

I appreciate your help!

Dawit

Dawit,

This gives you all of the primary email addresses: gam print users

Sorry, this fell off my radar a bit. I ended up getting the info with another method and manually updating. But no, the command I ran returned aliases, so apparently it DOES NOT give the current primary. No value called ID was returned so there was nothing to look up.
