to GAM for G Suite
My boss asked that I provide him a list of Groups and members. I successfully ran

gam print groups name description members > groups.csv

He has asked if there is a way to determine the last time the group was used for sending/receiving an email.

Is there a GAM command for that?

Thanks in advance.

Best,
Dale

There's no API for this so no way for GAM to determine but you can navigate to:

and you should see info on last email to listed groups (assuming you have proper permissions to the groups)

Also note that Groups can be used for a whole lot more than just emails, like Calendar invitations, permissions in Google Drive/Docs/Sheets/Slides, and so on. So just because an email hasn’t gone to a Group recently, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not being used.

Cheers,

Ian

Ian,

Thanks for the response. That makes sense.

No one runs untested code on a network server, for the code may crash and take down the server. Likewise, no one puts old format data files into new databases. The new database will be corrupted, and the data will be lost. No, you put new-format data into new databases.

One way to go about accomplishing your task is to use BigQuery and get your gmail logs flowing into it. After enough time has elapsed you can write a query to see when the last time mail was sent as or received by the group. I can't remember who (possibly Kim Nillson or Steve @dyntech I think) has a public page with some examples of queries to use for exactly this. Ian makes a very important note about other uses for groups though, if the next part of your task is to perform a cleanup of said groups, this data alone doesn't give you a complete picture of whether or not the group is actually being used for something.

Brad,

Thanks for that heads up about BigQuery. I've not even heard of it before. We are a G-Suite corporate customer, so it may be (partially) covered under our license.

best,
Dale
