We want to prevent students from using Google Chat during certain hours of the day (when classes are going on). Chat GPT says, "Use GAMADV-XTD3 (you already use GAM) or Admin SDK to flip Chat settings for an OU at certain times of day.   Example:  8:00 AM → Disable Chat for students  3:30 PM → Enable Chat againThis is the closest to “pause/unpause” you’re asking for."
Do you think GAMADV-XTD3 would be the best way to do this?  Has anyone here attempted this before?

Gina,

ChatGPT is confused; there is no API support for enabling/disabling Chat for an OU.

Gina,

A clarification, if there is no API support for an actiosn, thec GAM can't help.

Context Aware Access (CAA) is the solution here. You can create an access level that defines the times students should have access and then apply that to the Chat service.

I believe you'll need a premium license for the students in order to use CAA.

Maybe you can accomplish this with your Classroom Management or Filtering solution.  For example, Securly Classroom or Securly Filtering.

I also am interested if it is possible to block Google Chat during certain hours.

I only have Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals. I attempted without success (March 2025) to block chat during school hours using my filtering software (GoGuardian). I could block the Google Chat window (chat.google.com) but not the access to Google Chat that is integrated into Gmail. I also reached out to Google Support and got this response:  "This is Xxxxxx from the Google Workspace Support Team. Upon doing my research it seems that the setup is not yet possible. You can only block the Google Chat application but for Google Chat inside Gmail is not yet applicable you can do it manually for each user  click on quick settings and then click customize you have the option to select Google Chat or Google Meet."

The CAA solution I mentioned above blocks chat.google.com, mobile app and in Gmail and it's fully supported, not some hack to block certain urls or disable/enable the service constantly.

I get it's a $ and that can be difficult for EDU but it's at least worth adding to the list of reasons you might eventually consider upgrading. It should work for EDU Standard and above.

Thank you to all who responded, and Jay, thank you for this info about CAA. I will start working on this solution.    You all rock!
