No Search Solution?! WOW.

The title says it all, I was checking the documents to see what the current intended approach is, assumed Firestore has a searchable field for full text search at this point

But nope, not only that, no direct solution at all

As per now there isn't any built-in search solution for Cloud Firestore. But you can submit a feature request for the product team to consider this functionality.

As I'm sure you are aware,  GAE Standard has the Search service, but this is being phased out and no replacement is available on GAE Flex.  

The lack of an integrated Search offering kinda blows a hole in the entire "server-less platform" vision.

I found this documentation regarding how to have a full text search in Firestore.

Additionally I found this feature request which asks for full text search in the Firestore UI. If you would like that feature to be added to GCP I encourage you to indicate that you are affected by it by pressing the star button.

Users: Wait. Is this the same google that is literally the largest search provider on the planet?

Google: Yeah, that's us.

Users: But search is too hard to provide in your cloud services platform.

Google: Right. You can do a feature request for it.

Users: Do you implement features we request?

Google: Generally, no. But we do take away features like mail and search, and then you can request that we give them back.

Users: Which you will never do.

Google: Correct.

The mind boggles.

It's concerning because if the lack of email and search services is to prevent a clash, then Google sees cloud users as competition. If so, you have to also wonder if some of the bugs are intentionally left as is, for example back in the day if a request failed on the higher network layer it was never logged anywhere etc. - and at one point I lost quite a bit players in my game because of issues like this

Without going into conspiracy theories deeper, I'm just sad, as I love App Engine / NodeJS - it's super agile and fun, would be nice if it had a search solution as well, but if I'm going to implement search myself, I might as well just not use GCS for this project at all, which is a niche search engine for watch auctions

Search is deeply intertwined with the database solution, the original App Engine Search worked well even though it wasn't DB integrated, being in the same ecosystem made it work, but it's just not worth spinning an expensive VPS just to maintain a manual search solution, I'd just buy the biggest dedicated server I can buy and put everything there, including the app
