AJAX search alternatives?

Now that the AJAX search API is offline, is there an alternative for general search (custom search appears to be restricted to searching within a set of domains) from a Perl script?
I would prefer not to go to a competing search engine, but without an adequate API from Google, I may have to.

If you set up a Custom Search Engine, you can then return to the settings and remove the site restrictions so that it will search everything. But it still won't be the same as a regular Google search. Beyond that option, there are no other search services authorized by Google. You could try the Bing API or the Yahoo! BOSS API, but they have their own limitations and drawbacks.

The results are ranked differently. Some results aren't returned at all. I'm certain it's so that you and I can't launch a competitor search engine powered by Google.
