Skip / Close button on Interstitial ads not working (Android)

Some of our users from Brazil are reporting that the Close button on interstitial ads is not working. This is on Android, the close button shows in the top left corner but when pressed nothing happens. Apparently this is a rare issue but, as you can imagine, it is very frustrating. I have seen many reports of such problems on the forums in the past. Is this a known issue, is there any progress on this, and is there anything developers can do about it?

From my side I have seen such problems in Android devices which were not updated for very long time. Maybe this is something related to blocking Javascript in the ad, I don't know. Recently I have not seen myself an instance of an ad on which the close button is not working and can not reproduce this.

Our users named some ads for which the close button is not working. They are video ads and look fine to me. I don't think this is due to a specific creative that is broken.

Also, is it allowed to automatically close an interstitial ad from inside our app if we detect that it stays too long on screen or misbehaves? I am worried that this is unfair to advertisers so up to now have never considered this type of measures. But we just don't know what else we can do to deal with these broken close buttons and we try to consider all possibilities.

It is always recommended to use the latest versions of the SDK. As of today, the latest version of the Google Mobile Ads Android is 23.6.0.

I have run the Google sample application and I can see that the close button is working as expected, On click of the close button ad is closed. In regards to the sample project, It serves as a reference for creating a new project or integrating the relevant code pertaining to the close button issue within your own project where the issue is occurring.
It is very important to follow AdMob Policies, as well as Implementation Guidelines to avoid any issues. Kindly double-check your implementation so that Ads load and show as expected. You may refer to the Interstitial Implementation Guidelines, as well as the Recommended and Disallowed implementation guidance for further reference. 

To clarify, can you confirm if this issue arises on all devices or solely on the specified ones? Additionally, please verify whether you're attempting to reproduce the issue within our Google sample application.

Could you kindly share the below information privately so we can gain full visibility of your implementation.

• Video recording

Thank you for the reply! If I am able to reproduce the issue on my own device, I will write. As I said earlier, the problem with broken close buttons is reported by our users. I have no idea what are their devices. I can only say that the issue is rare and happens on "tides", that is everything is fine for some (long) time but then we again receive several reports of broken close buttons. It is not realistic to ask users to send logs or record videos. They sometimes send screenshots but since there is no way to force AdMob to load a specific creative id on a test device I can not even test with the same ad as seen by our users.
