Hello,

Many apps give users just two options:
Either subscribe (pay) or consent to ALL ads and tracking, including personalized ads (which is legally allowed under the GDPR as users have the free choice if they want to pay or accept all kind of ads).

Is there a way to use Googles UMP Consent SDK on iOS in a way so that the users only see 2 buttons:
- Consent
or
- Subscribe (Pay)?

(I don't want and don't need a "no not consent" or "manage options" button in this case.)

I thought about using my own custom consent screen to realize this, but soon Google will only show ads if apps use a certified CMP (Consent Management Platform) like Google's UMP SDK (which I think doesn't offer the option to only show a "pay" or "consent" button). And as a small business I can't go through the bureaucratic process to certify my own custom CMP with Google.

So, how can I realize this?

Thank you so much.

Kind regards,
Martin

Hello Martin,

Thanks for reaching out.

Referencing the AdMob Edit and format messages article, the following combinations of options are available in the European regulations message:
  • Consent or Manage options
  • Consent, Do not consent, or Manage options

Regards,
Joshua

Hello Joshua,

Thank you for your response. I understand the options available within the European regulations message framework as outlined in the AdMob documentation. However, I'd like to emphasize the importance and potential benefits of Google's own CMP (UMP SDK) supporting a simplified consent model that offers users the choice between subscribing (paying) and consenting to all ads and tracking.

Implementing such a model could provide significant advantages for both Google and publishers. It would streamline the consent process, making it easier for users to understand their choices and potentially increasing the likelihood of consent or subscription. This, in turn, could lead to better user experiences, higher consent rates, and increased revenue opportunities for publishers, while still maintaining compliance with GDPR and respecting user privacy.

Given the challenges businesses face in navigating the complexities of GDPR compliance and the limitations in customizing consent management platforms, having Google's UMP SDK offer this simplified option would be a highly valuable addition. It would support a more direct and user-friendly approach to consent and subscription models, which is increasingly important in today's digital landscape.

Is there any possibility that Google might consider this feedback for future updates of the UMP SDK or provide guidance on how publishers could implement such a model within the current regulatory and technical constraints?

Thank you for considering this suggestion. I look forward to your thoughts.

Kind regards,
Martin

Hi Martin, you can do the following to achieve your desired result:

Enable the Do Not Consent Button, change the text of the Button to "Pay 4 Ad-Free" and track if the pressed the "Do not consent" button and load your payment process!

Hi Marco,

Thank you so much for your suggestion. But I doubt this is possible. AdMob's configuration page only allows to choose if the "Do not consent" button is present, but it does not allow to change the text of the button, please see the screenshot attached.

And how do I track if the user has chosen "Do not consent"?

Thank you!

Best regards,
Martin

Hi, try clicking  right into the button the do not consent button, this should allow to change the text oft if it doesn't try deleting the the UMP Form in Admob and create a new one.

There' are some helper methods to determine wether the user gave consent or did not consent

It's also available for flutter and kotlin, just Google it :)

Hey Marco,

Interesting, I haven't realized you can change the text on the buttons but it seems to work. Thank you! :-)

Great suggestion. This really sounds like a solution to achieve the desired result. Thank you so much!

Best regards,
Martin
