Hi all,

Looking for some help with troubleshooting/fixing my trainer dropping out during rides. I've been using GC 3.7.1 with Training to simulate my outdoor bike rides on my indoor smart trainer (Tacx Flow). It's been working well for the past 2 months except the last 4 rides I've done have had the trainer seem to disconnect from GC midway, and the only way to reconnect is to restart the entire application. Stopping workout, disconnecting inside GC then reconnecting does not bring back power/cadence data, even though the log inside the training window reports that GC has connected to the trainer again.

I ran GC with `--debug` but there are no disconnection logs at the time of the issue (hence 'disconnecting' in quotes in the title). GC seems to just be writing the gradient data just fine, but suddenly my power/cadence in GC will drop to 0 and I can feel the trainer resetting the resistance back to some default value.

I attached the full --debug output, the location-scrubbed activity file, and the version information from within GC. I am using a UB400 TP-Link BT 4.0 adapter, about 4 feet away from the trainer with no physical obstacles in the way. I have also used a BT HR monitor and BT headphones at the same time (along with trying without any of those connected), and those did not get dropped at all when the trainer gets disconnected. I have also restarted the PC, and done full shutdown/boot up again, and the issue persists.

According to the workout data, I started at 7:08:59, and power/cadence data dropped off at 17:51 through the workout, so that would correspond to roughly 7:26:50 in the logs, where GC is still only writing gradient with no error logs. The pause and disconnecting/reconnecting after 7:27:03 were initiated by me manually.

The likely cause is electromagnetic interference, in the troubleshooting section of the wiki there is some explanation and recommendations about this.

Latest v3.8 (DEV2605 and Snapshot) builds include a feature which may help if you cannot fix the cause:
  • Add reconnect attempt timer after BT40Device unexpected disconnect (#4812)

I also suggest trying the latest v3.8 (DEV2605) build. It has proven the most (first) reliable connection for me with BT connections.
Alternatively you could try switching to ANT+ with a reputable adapter, this has proven to be the most reliable connection for me.

Would the auto-reconnection help at all? I had tried stopping the workout completely, disconnecting inside GC and reconnecting, which I assume would be a similar mechanism. And the log window inside GC will report that it has connected properly to the trainer upon doing those steps, but power/cadence will still be 0 and resistance on the trainer will still be the default value.

I will try 3.8 tomorrow morning as well, thanks

According to your first post (TL&DR) it should not since no disconnect is detected.

BTW,  since GoldenCheetah has not changed in your installation, perhaps you should look for what may have changed: BT adapter drivers, Trainer firmware and environment.

Also to ensure that you have no other app or device operating that could
try to connect to the trainer. For me if I have the wahoo app open with
GC connected to the trainer a bit of a battle for control exists.
