As a matter of detail, I don't think this has come up after the fall of Costa. It was posted on the Goychem Daiz-2 (Goan Heritage) group by Amalia Nazareth on Oct 28, 2023, and then too, after it was posted "many times" as WhatsApp puts it. See the attachment. FN

If it was posted earlier, it was later changed with the phrase «Invasão dos goeses »Invasion by the Goans, with deep political significance, and circled after the fall of the Costa.

As I see it, 99% of the Portuguese people dont't give a damn about the ancestry of our fellowcountrymen. We were of course aware of António Costa's ancestry, but only a few people felt it worthwhile to refer to him as "chamuça" or "monhé"... For the rest of us, Goans are just Portuguese, whether they are Catholic or Hindu...

What does “assalto ‘a vida mental” mean? Is the implication that the Goans are making them neurotic? There are excellent psychiatrists in Portugal if that is the case.

Dear sir,

I am sorry, but I am in Portugal, listening to the news, worried about the political situation of my country, and in no way whatsoever have the Portuguese made any comment on our Goan community.
Posting false news is no good service to anyone.
The Portuguese are worried about how the fall of a government may postpone urgent answers and solutions the country is needing. That is all.

As my good friend, the late Baki Borcar (the great poet) once told me, “o mal está organizado, o bem não está” (the evil is organized, the good is not). In the US the Jews have an Anti-defamation  League that helps track of antisemitism, reacts to it, and educates the public. But that seems to be an exception. The evil, also, seems to spread faster than the good. As the old Nazi phrase goes, a lie said many times eventually becomes the truth.

Whether consciously or unconsciously, the vast majority of Portuguese people feel that to be Portuguese only two conditions must be satisfied:

1. Wishing to be Portuguese
2. Being able to speak Portuguese

Ancestry is of no concern...

It must be quite unconsciously. The number of Portuguese that on their daily life are invited to go back to their lands when a minimal conflitual situation starts surely have reasons to doubt so. They share the problem of being black, Portuguese born in Brazil which is easily identifiable, etc. The case of the very small Goan community, for historical and social reasons, is an exception. In some cases we are speaking of pure racism, in other cases, of its variant, xenophobia.

Although I fully agree with that these two conditions today, I am afraid, from personal experience as somebody born in Angola to Goan parents, who grew up in both Angola and Portugal and then became an adult in Goa, ancestry did matter for a large population in Portugal, specially from the backward and poor areas like Alentejo, Minho and other remote places.
There was a lot of prejudice in Lisbon too during the 1970's and 1980's mainly due to sheer ignorance and malice, blaming incomers for taking up their jobs - but things have changed a lot today.
Ancestry was the reason many local Portuguese did not climb up the echelons of administration and power in all territories during the colonial times, possibly with the exception of Goa, as many Goan shone mainly due to education and were recognized for their brilliance.
Interesting enough, all types of ancestries used to mingle together in harmony and with no issues at work and social events at the ex-colonies.
Education is always key to help change medieval mindsets of those who think they are 'higher' and help those who are 'lower' to challenge the system.
Glad these former people's kids have a modern take to life and are more tolerant to various ancestries today.
Interestingly enough, my Portuguese friends tell me I am Portuguese, my Angolan friends tell me I am Angolan, my Goan friends tell me I am Goan and my local friends here in the UK call me British, ancestry being secondary in three cases... except in Goa where ancestry apparently matters! 🙂
It feels weird, but great to be able to speak and feel all these identities.

Yes, that does happen, but how often? Can those few instances tipify Portuguese behaviour? I sincerely doubt it. If you walk in Lisbon you only have to see the number of mixed couples and children of mixed blood (for the lack of another better way of saying it) to realize that ancestry is of very little importance to many - probably most - Portuguese people. Fortunately. We have always been a "mestiço" people and adding a few more genes does not frighten us... No such a thing as a "pure" Portuguese...

Two observations:

1) The Portugal of today is markedly different from the country's ethos even 25 years ago  and the main difference may be European union. My subjective opinion is it does *feel* somewhat - and occasionally significantly - less racist against Indian people, or more generally South Asians, than most of the rest of Europe. That's an impressive thing, in its own way.

2) Nonetheless, it would be too much to expect Portugal to be immune to racism of the right-wing European variant, and it never has been so. Yet, every single time racism in Portugal is broached as a topic, in my experience, the standard Portuguese response is stubborn denial that such a thing could ever be perceived in the first place. That itself is quite worrisome, as is the refusal to accept that others experience the society in different ways.

Poor Teófilo Braga! He believed that the Portuguese were among the “purest” races on earth. Apparently he also suffered from phobias and cleptomania. This may be the reason why he hated Mgr. Sebastião Rodolfo Dalgado, his colleague in the Faculdade de Letras of the Universidade de Lisboa.
And yes, racism is a sensitive topic and being labeled as racists is usually painful to the Portuguese. Armando Cortesão once told me that the “Portuguese never committed racism anywhere in the world”. He was upset at Charles Boxer who demonstrated that there was racism in the Portuguese overseas territories. I did not say anything to him out of respect for the old man. The truth seems to be in the middle. There were some who were racists but many others who were not. And the Goans should keep in mind that there were racists among them as well. Mateus de Castro, praised by Dr. Teotônio ide Souza as an “unsung hero”, was not only a casteist but also a racist by his own description. Let the one without sin cast the first stone.

VM,

No country is immune to racism. But the point is not whether there are racists in Portugal - There are! - but whether racist incidents in Portugal are frequent enough to make them a problem. Having two mixed blood daughters - black Angolan ancestry - I am very sensitive to this issue, and I know only of rare instances of racism in my country. We shouldn't ignore them but it is wrong to use those few instances to tipify Portugal and the Portuguese people.

Bravement is the epitome of evil.
The woman is a descendant of emigrants yet she made a life mission to completely crush any immigration to the UK. The Rwanda plan was just labelled as unlawful by the UK supreme court today.
Yes, she was fired for abusing her position and authority to criticize the police on very harsh terms, just because she is their 'boss'.
Her continous clashes with the PM, who is heading a sinking Tory Titanic, does not help the party image.
It was good riddance, hope these Tories lose out big time at the next elections as the public who had voted them, most of them disillusioned Brexiteers, have finally woken up to the harsh reality of their policies.
The UK needs people in power who will dwell with real issues of real people and not waste their time with petty politics and protections for their 'mates'.
She might as well take the last trip to Rwanda and stay there, nobody needs her and her arrogance here.

Hi Joao Paulo,

Well said! She is an abhorrent woman who would probably have sold her parents to get what she wants. I think it all stems from her own home life. Considering that she grew up at a time when racism was at its peak via the likes of National front and the early Goans had to contend with this hate. This was finally curtailed for many years only for the Pandora box to be opened in 2016 via Brexit. At the time I vocally expressed worries that this would embolden the racists totalling four million of the total voting population. Sadly thirteen million voters including many Goans voted to leave based on very nostalgic reasons of the British Raj in India and Africa or petty reasons and we know have seen a decline from the heady days upto the crash of 2008. Suella by her own admission is married to a Jewish Zionist and maybe she and husband (who lived there before) should consider moving there permanently as they believe it is their promised land. Her soulmate Nethanyahu is clearing Gaza for her return. It is surprising that her father or for that matter Priti Patel's father chose to move to UK at the time when it's economy was in poor shape in the late 60s and early 70s when it was considered a basket case in Europe and resulted in them becoming members of the then European Common Market. They could easily have moved further South to Rwanda where they could have fitted a lot better considering they had lived and worked in Africa. Something to ponder.
Regards
Fausto

There are a lot of Africans in Portugal, not necessarily in Lisbon, where all tourists go. If one bothers to go a bit inside at the suburbia, one can find a lot of them. Most of them are really nice people, many of who unfortunately do not have good jobs, hence their lifestyle is not necessarily a posh one - they just get by. But many youngsters are doing well in studies, so there is a bright future awaiting them.
Yes, a few armed robberies involving some of their youth have tarnished their image a bit, but overall the African people from Angola and other ex-colonies are great people of simple minds and good nature.
I can say that from personal experience when I lived just outside Lisbon and did mingle with them like everybody else.
I have never seen a single African dealing with drugs myself. I believe there is a specific area in Portugal called Casal Ventoso where there is an amnesty on drugs - taking or selling. Although many drug users are black, most dealers are not.

Dear Helga,

That's right, most have not so well paid jobs, but one of them (an Angolan woman) was Minister of Justice. And a couple are members of Parliament. It's at least a good start and gives us hope that in some years they will be seen on all social and economic levels. Meanwhile they are treated as the citizens they are, with the same rights as the rest of us, and very few will have ever felt any sign of discrimination. Better than what has been achieved in most countries. Have you ever stopped to think why the World Ismaelite Organization decided to bring their world headquarters to Portugal? Maybe they realized that we treat fairly our minorities. As a Goan yourself, I am sure you have noticed that too... Not that we consider Goans as a minority. They are just Portuguese people with a specific ancestry.

All the best

Nuno
