Dear Eugene,

First of all congratulations on the Phd programme. If you can't get hold of the book, you may want to read Rochelle Pinto's work on the colonial press in Between Empires, her work is stellar, and I have found it immensely useful. Sandra Lobo of course has added profoundly to this canon of work but her writings are in Portuguese. Perhaps an initiative from us Goans to translate them into English is needed.

All best,
Selma

Dear Selma,

I would say all those who work with 19-20th century Goa have great admiration for Rochelle's book and other studies which impacts all of us. That is not at stake, nor is my individual work. Still, I cannot understand what do you exactly mean by saying that my work is in Portuguese? Apart from my PhD, in the in the last years most of it has been published in English language, one of the reasons for doing so is turning it more easily available to Goans. In that process I am extremely grateful to the generosity of several colleagues in helping to improve its English language quality, above all Paul Melo e Castro who has consistently done so along the years.

At this point what is being discussed is not my individual work, but the availability of a book published in English language of which I am just one of the editors. Covering press published within the Indo-Pacific region, it mostly includes chapters dedicated to Goan, African and Portuguese press, being contributed by scholars from different countries, including several Goans. And yes, I sincerely think, and am proud, that the collective democratic multidisciplinary international Group (of which you are now a member) that I have launched with Adelaide Vieira Machado and another scholar, Cátia Costa, dedicated to the study and theorization of colonial press has advanced significantly the knowledge and thinking about what colonial press is, and its role in the building of contemporary world, namely by consistently bring to the front door the contribution of non-Western and of subalternized perspectives, and by helping to open new lines of research. And I am immensely grateful to the editors of the Routledge collection for trusting on us, by accepting the proposal to house four books dedicated to this field of studies, three of them already published

May we find the mental disposition to actually read and learn with each other's work.

Best wishes,

Sandra

Dear Sandra,

My apologies. I only meant accessibility to academic work produced by academics who live outside of Goa remains poor for us Goans, one, because we do not know where to access it and secondly because of the language barriers. Ideally, there should have been a home-grown Goa University Press which should have emerged decades ago to make academic work more accessible to us. The only time we are lucky enough to have easy is when the Oxford University Press or Goa1556 takes the initiative.

Warm wishes,
Selma

Dear Selma,

Thanks for the info, I have Rochelle's book on the press, Also AK Prioriolkar's book, Printing Press in India. I am not awareif Fred's thesis is available in book form. I am still doing work on submitting an application. It requires a few  more steps.
I have to consider the time-frame and the requirements to do coursework. All these things have to be taken into account if I have the energy to go on another academic journey. The tuition fee is high, though I could apply for a few exemptions because of age.  I lack knowledge of Portuguese, and that's a big disadvantage.
I should submit my application in the middle or third week of this month. I will be in Goa in mid-January, mostly for holidays. The result of the application will be out by the end of Jan.

Dear Selma,

The reverse also works. That's why each time I go to India my truck comes full of books published by Indian scholars. When available ebooks are a much cheaper, accessible from anywhere and environment friendly solution.

Best wishes,

Sandra

I hope I read 'trunk' not truck! 🙂
From the UK I send books and heavier stuff to Goa by sea freight which is quite economical than by plane, and time it so that they arrive before I do.
And I do exactly the same thing reversed, as some Indian publications are good to have.
Regards,
Joao
