 Dr. Elgar deSa, Chief Scientist of the Marine Instrumentation Division, National

Institute of Oceanography, Dona Paula, is the inventor of MAYA and AVP.

 The autonomous Underwater Vehicle 'MAYA' and the Autonomous Vertical Profiler 'AVP,' 

 have enabled data collection at a very high resolution in coastal waters  and estuaries.

As a member  on the US research vessel Roger Revelle embarked on a 21-day voyage from Mormugao Port, 

as part of an Indo-US study on ‘Enhancing Knowledge of the Arabian Sea marine environment, through Science 

and Advanced Training’ (EKAMSAT), Prof Joaquim Goes focused on finding out how the delay of

the monsoons affect  fisheries.

The result is trouble for fisheries, particularly in a region with a lot of artisanal and subsistence fishing.

 “We are passing a tipping point ... The food chain has been turned upside down.”  said Goes.

Here is a link to an article by our Vivek Menezes, about Joaquim Goes, that talks of the wide spectrum of research he has conducted starting as a biochemist at the uni of Nagoya, Japan to his current research in the Arabian Sea.

Vivek aptly took a photo of him with the background of the gorgeous azulejos at the Menezes Bragança hall that depict Portugal’s discovery of a sea route to South Asia.
