Welcome Dr André de Quadros to the Goa-Research-Net.

He is Professor of Music, Boston University, and Distinguished
Academic Visitor, Queens. College, University of Cambridge.

We met online in 2021, at a time when he was bestowed the
2021 Brazeal Wayne Dennard Award for a lifelong commitment to
inclusion through teaching, scholarship, advocacy, and
artistry.

The citation said: "Through his work on faculty in the
Department of Music Education at Boston University and
beyond, de Quadros celebrates diverse choral traditions from
around the globe and expands the definitions of choral
practice to include the voices of those on the margins.  As
an author and editor, he has published nearly 50 editions of
choral music from the Muslim world, Asia, and the Pacific.
As a choral practitioner, he is developing new cross-cultural
experimental repertoire with influences of Arab, Indian,
Latin American, and Indonesian music and crisscrosses the
globe to work with his ensembles.  These programs include an
arts program for incarcerated individuals at prisons outside
of Boston, and community music projects that foster
connection and healing in areas like Jerusalem and the border
between the United States and Mexico.  De Quadros is also a
co-founder of The Choral Commons, a media platform that
provides a space for singing communities to realize the
liberatory potential of the ensemble."

Dear all,

Even though Sri Lanka isn't included on the list, the members of this group may like to know that several recordings of the music and dance traditions of the Sri Lanka Portuguese Burghers (káfriinha, láánsas, etc.) and of the Afro-Sri Lankans (manja) are available in the online collection of the "Documentation of Sri Lanka Portuguese" project, a team endeavour which I coordinated a couple of years ago:

This corpus of data is publicly available for anyone who is interested in researching it. To find the relevant recordings, click on "Access collection" and then, on the left tab (under "Genre") check "Instrumental music" and "Music performance".

Yours,

Hugo,
Good point to mention Sri Lanka.
I have forwarded the original invite to my friend Dr Shihan de Silva Jayasuriya, who is music researcher well versed in Portuguese influenced music in Sri Lanka.
We had both collaborated in the past on live music workshops and research work on the influences of Portuguese music in Goa and Sri Lanka and the similarities of Dulpods and Bailas, she on the piano/voice and me on the guitar/voice.
Hope she can attend.
Regards,
Joao Paulo Cota

Thanks very much to you, Joao Paulo, for sending this on to Shihan de Silva Jayasuriya, and to Hugo for drawing our attention to this. I’ll wait for Shihan to be in touch with me.

Recently, a lot of research about the dance and music traditions of the Portuguese Burghers has also been done by Dr. Mahesh White-Radhakrishnan:

Here are the links to a few of the relevant publications:

And, in case you're interested, you may also listen to episode 2 of Mahesh White-Radhakrishnan and Georgia Curran's podcast Music! Dance! Culture!, dedicated to Portuguese Burgher music:
