Hello,
Do we have any experts here in the Modi language (ancient Marathi).
I am currently working on a 19th century matter and need to figure out what is written in a particular document that apparently is in ancient Marathi, total of about three pages.
I was told that this is a totally different language from modern Marathi, so I would assume it needs somebody who is a bit senior to know and well conversant with Marathi or from Maharastra to that ancient language.
Any help or pointers to anyone who can assist would be great.
Thanks,
Joao Paulo Cota

There was a recent workshop to teach the Modi script. But this was the first I've heard of one in a very long time.... Could be the first also, not sure.
These could be more popular in Maharashtra, as it was only in the early 1930s that the Devanagari script was firmly decided on for use for Marathi. Earlier Modi was used a lot. (Marathi was also written in Balbodhi earlier.)
Some have called Modi the "cursive form of Devanagari", but am not sure how accurate that is.  It's also not a "different language", but a "different script".

I got so interested in this Modi script that I began to hunt for experts but with little success.
Finally my friend Atul Pai Kane sent me a link to an article that talks about the very same workshop on reading Modi that Frederick alluded to.

There one can read that a young history professor Rohit Phalgaonkar had taken the course and Atul even sent me the link to his LinkedIn profile but I am sure that Rohit is either on this forum or someone on this forum knows him. I don’t think you will find it hard to contact him, João Paulo.
Best,
Helga

Dear Dr Helga and Fred,
Many thanks for your kind replies and pointers.
Will try contact Prof Rohit.
I often come across these situations where my friends (who have similar languages as mother tongue) do not even know the script.
One of my Portuguese India postal history exhibits has items written in seven different languages that includes Gothic German and Old Croatian. Managed to get two very elderly people from both UK and overseas, one was a lady aged 95+ (!) to help in the respective translations! Sadly, these languages will perish with them when they will be no more amongst us someday... almost no efforts to preserve these two languages.
Hope this one with Modi script is a bit easier to deal with.
Thanks again,
Joao Paulo Cota
