How do you translate the Portuguese word Varado accurately? I found it in a baptismal certificate "...de Dabul, do Varado de Bombaim, .............."
Thanks a lot.

Though the literal meaning is Stranded or Aground, applied here it would be Island, as in the Island of Bombay (Varado do Bombaim).
At a point in time, until a wealthy and kindly Parsi merchant-aristocrat paid for road connections to be built from the coastal mainland to Bombay, the latter was an island surrounded by local waterways (rivers) that fed into the local sea, the Indian Ocean.

It surely has something to do with a judge's circumscription, from 'vara', "jurisdiction".
So I think!

Just for clarity, the local sea I referred to, is the Arabian Sea which is part of the northern Indian Ocean.

One might also consider that Dabul is a stone’s throw from the nearest beach Chowpatty, hence the stranded or aground adjectives that indicate if your ship ran aground you would be in proximity to Dabul.

Wonder whether that seagoing  connection resulted in Dabul becoming a significant settlement area for East Indian Catholics from the time of Portuguese Bombay and for Goan Catholics during the era of British Bombay.

Hi Dr Helga,
Varado is basically a diocesan district/zone under which some place falls into. Vara is the title of person appointed (by the church) to look after matters. In simple terms, Dabul would belong to the diocese of Bombay.
There is a source online:

Helga,
I believe it's the name given to a subdivision of a diocese in India.

Hello Helga - a 'varado' is a deanery - a sub-division of a diocese under a Dean (Vara) appointed by the bishop.

Thanks for the clarification. I had seen translated as district, regarding some padroado dioceses.

Thank you very much Rafael, Roland, Joao Paulo, Nuno, Mousinho and Tino. You are a bunch of sharp cookies.
My friend Conrad, whose father's baptismal certificate I was trying to translate with great help from Victor and Sandra, is also very grateful.
I loved the word deanery and I am going to find any and every opportunity to use it 😀
When I spoke to Conrad he said his dad left Salvador do Mundo for Dhobitalao to be a band master and then his son whose baptismal certificate this was moved to an almost desert Bahrain to build its infrastructure.
Again thanks a lot and best wishes,
Helga
