Hello everyone,
Would anyone have any scholarly reference or articles/ books that talk about the catholic Church vestments in Goa? History on the manufacturing or origin in Goa?

Warm regards
Neysa Vas

Neysa, The closest I can think of is Mónica Esteves Reis, who studied Goa's retables ("...altarpiece art made from stone, lime, and whitewash.... may also include traces of gold and polychrome") and Cristina Osswald, whose work focused on the Jesuit art and architecture of Old Goa. Maybe they would have some pointers. FN

The Cloistered Carmel sisters in Chicalim made them at one time.

Also the nuns at Santa Monica convent for most of its history. The Museum of Christian Art is an obvious resource, not only for displays of the vestments, but also because a lot of fact-finding is being done by many enthusiastic young people, notably Clive Figueiredo.

Best wishes,

Luis

Only just saw this -- probably not what you're looking for, but seems interesting...

Santa Monica had much to do with the sacred vestments of the church in Goa. The same tradition was continued in Canara for a long time because Goan priests were in churches here. Later, in recent years it shifted to a couple of the local convents, cloistered and others. After the 1960s the style and cloth changed because of Vatican II reforms and a lot of woodwork and vestment-making took new shape. Much came from outside Canara. For example, many priests removed earlier woodwork of alters and put marble in their place diminishing the art value of the church vestments and alters and buildings. Walls and facades were shifted from granite to concrete. I have done extensive study on St Lawrence Church, Attur-Karkala in Canara, a very successful pilgrim centre for all, Christians and all other religions but I do not know of any study elsewhere in Canara. Much art in statues and vestments of Goan origin remains.
