QUOTE The Danish-Halle mission, established in 1706, is the first organized missionary undertaking in the history of the Protestant Church. The extensive written records of this undertaking have an enormous significance for research on the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. In a project supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG) the archival holdings of the Francke Foundations at Halle and of the Evangelical-Lutheran Mission in Leipzig were systematically opened up again between 2003 and 2005 and were made publicly available in an online-database. PS: Search the archives also for "Portugal", which mentions the 1755 tsunami, etc.... [In 18th-century Portuguese and European accounts, it was usually described as a “maremoto” (seaquake), “dilúvio” (deluge), “inundação” (flood), or simply great sea waves. The Japanese term tsunami only entered international scientific vocabulary in the late 19th–20th centuries.]

Dear Frederick,

Many thanks for sharing the link to the Danish-Halle archive, which I encourage everyone to explore. This corpus of documents has been of great use to me in the past, especially the missionaries' comments about the use of the Portuguese language in (South) India. One paper which makes substantial use of these materials is the one below, about linguistic variation among the Portuguese-speaking communities of the region:

All the best,

Hugo Cardoso
