Hello!

This is just to keep everyone posted about HSS research related events in Goa.

The Research Forum, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, BITS Pilani, KK Birla Goa Campus organised a Research Methodology Workshop Series from January to early March, 2024, of which I was fortunate to have been able to attend three that were pertinent to my research.

1. Collection of Oral History by Nandini Oza, Former President of the Oral History Association of India

2. Archival and Historical Research by Prof. Lakshmi Subramanian

3. Ethnography by Prof. Rajesh Dev, Delhi University

The resource persons offered learners a comprehensive understanding of each research methodology.

Prof. Oza shared her experiences as an oral historian during the Narmada Bachao Andolan, highlighting the significance of preserving memories and experiences which is then used to generate data.

Prof. Subramanian delved into the intricacies of archival study, exploring various archives such as the Godrej archive and the PARI network, amongst others.

Prof. Dev discussed the evolving nature of ethnography and its incorporation in diverse analytical practices.

Since each workshop was a whole day event, the second half gave researchers an opportunity to share their work and resources with others.

Overall, the lectures offered valuable insights into the effective utilisation and adaptability of these methodologies emphasising their capacity to be tailored to evolving requirements.

The other workshops focussed on the following methodologies:

1. Multi modal translation – analysis of visual texts (films) by Prof. Nikhila. H., EFLU

2. Data Analytics for HSS by Prof. Nitin Upadhyay, IIM, Jammu

3. Analysis of Visual Texts (graphic novels) by Prof. Nandini Chandra, University of Hawaii

4. Action Research by Prof. Sunil Santha, TISS, Mumbai

5. Qualitative research &  NVIVO by Dr Bijaya Biswal, Sangath, Goa

6. Conducting Qualitative Interviews by Dr. Yashi Gandhi and Ms. Grace Pacheco, Sangath, Goa

The workshops were limited to 20 participants and included faculty/PhD students from within the Department as well as external participants from colleges in Goa.

If anyone is interested, I'm happy to share information on upcoming events.

Thank you for sharing that, Rochelle. Found it most useful.
We in Goa surely need to initiate some work on the Oral History front.
Please do keep sharing other pointers to what's happening on the academic front in Goa here, otherwise, the right hand doesn't know what the left is doing... in the worst sense of the Biblical term :-) Thanks again, FN
PS: For those who might not know, Rochelle Fernandes is doing her PhD in English at the BITS-Pilani Goa campus.
PPS: This is for others too. Please do connect us with what's happening in your respective campuses.
