What a lovely interview-article, Pamela. A marvellous nun too - I like that while dedicating herself to God, she is still very connected with people and the community - not closed in her convent walls - physically and mentally.

Thanks, Pamela, for this interview. Sr Noemia's personal history gives us a genuine peep into the history of the times she describes.
Keep up your painstaking work.

Dear Tino and Fatima,

Am glad both of you found it interesting. I thought Sister Noemia was quite something too. Can hardly believe this is the first time she is getting any media space at all. Such a poverty of intellectual capital we suffer from.....

Nirmala Niketan was the teachers' institute par excellence. In 1990s when Konkani was to be medium of instruction and in nagari script, I offer to teach English teaching, poorly paid women and men teachers in large numbers, Nirmala Niketan came forward to give them teaching certificate for the work I had done with them. Much of Goan folklore was processed from trainees, which was collected from their caste-occupational homes, and reduced to writing for pupils. It became a model of teacher training. NN accepted it and certified the teachers  so that they could teach in Konkani medium and get a govt salary. I have met many of these teachers later with satisfied teaching and living. Unfortunately there was a backlash among Catholics of Goa. They wanted English medium back at primary level and challenged Alemao's educational reform.

Dr WIlliam, I think you are referring to the Nirmala Institute of Education (Altinho, Panjim). FN
