Goa before the 1961 Indian military action leading to the expelling of Portuguese rule, saw a division of the population into two camps (non religious, non caste). One favoured the continuation of  Portuguese, the other did not. 

Valmiki’s book, going by the title, will express the views of the latter section. After all Valmiki’s father was a British Army (rather than Portuguese Army) commissioned officer in the medical branch and therefore heir to pro-India sentiments. What we also need side by side is a Goa centric pro Portuguese view taking a modern stance on the matter and looking in hindsight as Valmiki probably does, so we can balance the two views. There are a few such books but written by die-hard Portuguese speaking Goans whose views would be probably anachronistic.

Having said that, I look forward as enthusiastically to read this latest book as I have all Valmiki’s previous writings.

You never fail to inspire smiles in whatever you write.

There were actually four camps (not two) as I have clearly elucidated -- and as you correctly point out in parenthesis, none was exclusive to any particular caste or creed, as is widely, and erroneously, believed.

My father was educated in Bombay (school, college and medical studies). He was a doc in the Indian Army Medical Corps (now Defence Medical Corps) but I was born and bred in Goa -- and assure you that though I hold the Indian defence forces in much esteem, the fact of my father has not slanted or jaundiced my view. 

But may I hasten to add, as I think poet Milton said, 'better to reign in hell than serve in heaven'. No one likes to be under the domination of a foreign power, save when one stands to benefit socially, economically, or in other ways. Please do read what Msgr Estevam Jeremias Mascarenhas, an elected Goan 'deputado' native of Bastora, Bardez, told the Lisbon parliament on 24 May 1853, in the book. Much before, Propaganda Fide appointed bishop, Mateus Castro Mahale, had put his thoughts on this into action. I have cited several such instances, both of the Goan clergy and civilian.

I also speak of anachronism, though in a different context.

I quote about a dozen Portuguese authors, civil and military (besides, of course, 130+ authors from Goa, a few from India, but most international). Strictly speaking, this is NOT research work that delves into primary sources but more in my journalistic style of piecing together a story.

My advantage has been the knowledge of the Portuguese language, books by Portuguese military officers who were in Goa in December 1961, books and research thesis by Portuguese civilians including a journalist based in Lisbon, and first-hand testimonies of Goan-origin Indian military officers who participated in Operation Vijay-1 ... Lt Col Paul Fernandes of Sarzora (now alas no more), Lt Cdr John Eric Gomes of Borda-Margao (now at Defence Colony, Porvorim), sister of Air Vice Mshl Erlic Pinto, daughter of Brig Donald Viegas of Curtorim (she was a news reader/anchor at Doordarshan), Brig Michael Mendonca (son of Col Peter Mendonca of Moira), son of naval Capt Patrick Telles of Ponda, naval Capt A.F. Colaco (in the Indian Navy's official account), Gp Capt Trevor Joseph Fernandes of Siolim (recently passed away in Hyderabad), son of Lt Col Vitalio de Paula Ribeiro Lobo, daughter of Surg Cdr Frederick Nazareth of Nachinola, widow of Wg Cdr Vishwanath Sawardekar, daughter of Major Gerson R.A. de Souza (who may be with us on this forum), widow of Major Cesar P.F. Lobo and a few North Indian officers who participated in Op. Vijay -- including Brig R.K. Mehta (then a Capt.) who was part of a small team commanded by Major Earl William ("Bill") Carvalho (an Anglo Indian from Madras whose ancestors were converted to Christianity by Portuguese missionaries) that stormed the Portuguese last redoubt at Alpalqueiros, Vasco da Gama (the story is being told for the time in Indian military history).

I have named some of the Goan-origin officers (there were 20 in all). Goa is a small place. Surname and village name disclose identity!

Colonial apologists will say all these officers were in India, not Goa. Why did they, or their ancestors, emigrate from Goa?

The answer is nuanced in the book.

Besides, I am still under Covid protocol :-)

Not just Timor Leste but the stories of Angola, Mozambique and Guine, though bloodied, are just as interesting, as are from the other smaller possessions in Africa. I have briefly touched only Sao Joao Batista de Ajuda, the tiniest, in Dahomey (now Benin), because it had a direct bearing on India's change of policy towards Salazar (from peaceful methods to the use of force). Before he ordered the destruction of Goa, Salazar had implemented the scorched earth policy in Sao Joao Batista de Ajuda -- leaving behind only stones and ashes.

Surprisingly, African authors have dwelt on Goa but, to my knowledge, not on the freedom movements in their own countries.

Congratulations. Am in awe of your research, ferreting information and piecing together the story, as only a journalist can. Can't wait to read the book.

About the other issues that were thrown up in the discussions though, I am not so sure if the prism of colonialisms and nationalisms and such binaries, still holds some sixty or so years later. Many nationalisms have demonstrated their own sub-colonialisms in this time. But that's another debate.

Good luck with the book. And thanks for what is undoubtedly an invaluable contribution.

Yes, nationalisms come in various forms. In the case of Goa, the point has been discussed ... for instance that Goa was taken in 1510 because one party had the power to subdue the other. It was the same in 1961. One party had the power to subdue the other. I have brought these points to the attention of the reader (very often as quotes). You will surely agree that it would be beyond the scope of the book to discuss the points. That I feel is for the readers to do.

The freedom/annexation/liberation issue with regards to Goa is complex. For people who are interested in pro-Portuguese stance, there is at least one good book by the former consul-general of the Portuguese in Bombay. Just this morning I picked up Goa's Freedom Struggle by Dr. Juliao Menezes as I want to check some things that Dr. Shusila Mendes mentioned in her piece in OHeraldo. I also have the pamphlet, The Goa Action, by D. R. Nakekar, and would sought out some details which I need.

I was informed by a friend of a Toronto university giving chance to seniors who will to do their Ph.D. I thought of it, and tried to find a guide. Unfortunately, Prof. Arthur Rubinoff, author of India's Use of Force in Goa, suffered from some heart ailments, as his wife, Prof. Janet, informed me. I hope to approach him now, or ask him if he knows any professor who would be willing to be my guide.

I was also bit taken aback because of my age. I don't know what benefit it would serve me, as it would take lot of time and effort. However, the subject appeals to me. 

I don't have Valmiki's earlier book and I forgot to check it up during my visit to Goa this year. 

Any suggestions of books regarding this subject is welcome, and for which I would be grateful. I have Gaitonde's and Rajan Narayan's books. Also PP Shirodkar's Who's Who of Freedom Fighters.

2. Goa's Who's Who of Freedom Fighters is a Goa Gazeteers Dept book, produced when PP Shirodkar (Jr.) was Director of Archives (concurrently of Gazeteers). A few copies are still available at the Goa Gazeteers Dept at Junta House, Panjim -- at ridiculously low prices fixed in the 1980s. I have cited from both volumes.

On my last visit to Goa, one of the books I picked up is Action in Goa, by Dr. Rammanohar Lobia. Haven't read it yet. I was denied to do my Ph.D by the Goa University, as I was a Canadian. The university asked me to procure a letter from a Canadian University, which was difficult as I did not study in Canada. I am told that York University is inviting seniors, I think over 60, if interested to do doctoral studies, even those who didn't study in Canada, provided the person is a post-graduate from universities outside Canada. 

I had applied and the late Dr  Teotonio de Souza was willing to be my guide. Even one Ph.D. (forgets his name) and working for the Institute in Mira Mar dealing with oceans was willing. Goa Unversity was not encouraging, to say the least.
