Dr. Luis
This site you mention has a gross mistake. In one of the lines  the article cites:  "including one of Vasco da Gama, who discovered the sea route from Europe to India and was Viceroy of Goa—from the 1500s to the late 1950s.".

It is well-known and well documented that the portraits of the Viceroys/Governors of the Estado da India were made by Goan Hindu artists.

Why Goan 'hindu' artists? Do they paint differently from Goan 'catholic' artists? Or is the point being made about Goan artists being trained in Western Art traditions of portraiture.

Was FN Souza a Catholic artist or just a modernist trying to develop Indian Modernism?

Portuguese documents of the 16th and 17th centuries state that those portraits were painted by Goan Hindu artists. Beyond this I do not know how to answer your question.

That’s a fair question Peter, but even in Bombay, it’s the Hindus and in particular Maharastrian Hindus that are the ace photographers, artists, painters and visual and graphic artists. If I didn’t know any better, I would say it’s in their genes.

In Bombay, it used to be that in the major Advertising Companies, the sketchers,  artists and art directors were almost all Marathi Hindus and the copywriters, ad campaign managers and client coordinators, all Catholic Goans and Mangloreans.

For example, in the successful Amul Girl campaign which runs through this day, the late Sylvester D’Cunha, (now succeeded by his son Rahul D’Cunha was the creator but the visualizer and artist, a Hindu.

Go figure.
Roland.

Hi Rohit,
I looked for   D'Costa, A. (1962). 'The Demolition of the Temples in the Islands of Goa in 1540 and the Disposal of the Temple Lands', Nouvelle Revue de Science Missionaries vol 18.
in my univ library (columbia Univ) but I couldn't find it.
I saw that it had been quoted in this paper https://www.mdpi.com/2077-1444/14/6/719 with a google link and from there I traced A. D'Costa to the Univ of Huntsville, Alabama. https://www.uah.edu/business/faculty-staff/anthony-d-costa
His web page provides his email which is anthony...@uah.edu
I am sure he will gladly send you a pdf if you write to him.
I couldn't find the book in my library either.
But if you need any papers or documents in the future do not hesitate to ask me.
Regards,
Helga

Dr Rohit,

Goa from Prehistoric Times has long been out of print. Antonio Mascarenhas, my father, would press a copy into a visitor’s hand. I guess many visitors never read the book, so you might find a copy in an unlikely place. All the best!

Hi,
i had the book which I bought when it was first published. Probably, still has it. I need to check. I thought a digitizes version would be helpful, and can be stored on my external hard drive. By the way, any more novels from your pen? Read the first one.
When I was in Goa, Oct 22 to Mar 23, I wanted to call you. I often pass by Migraton Gardens, going from my village, Bogmalo, to Vasco.
I know your brother, Tony.
Regards, and nice connecting with yuu,

Eugene
