It seems a common aspect of 19th century Portuguese notices/circulars issued to the public was that they were signed at the bottom by witnesses. Can anyone tell me what the purpose of these witness signatures was?
Many thanks,
Selma

Selma, an assurance that the notices were genuine and official.
