I have my grandmother's recipe book, in her handwriting, with the old measurements. I think it is precious.
Is there any literary cookery person out there who would be able to use, or even publish, it?
Xx

This (please see below) is what my search revealed, Selma.

"The Goan Cook's Guide" (or Goan Cuznerancho Sangat) is a historical, rare book from 1894, often accessed via archival sources rather than traditional retail."

Best regards,

Vivek

P.S. It is highly unlikely that the publisher, B.X. Furtado, Dhobi Talao, Mumbai (a few minutes, towards Metro cinema, from St. Xavier's college) will hold a copy in its archival inventory, Selma.

However, here (please see below) is relevant information.

Dear all,

The Furtado's do not have any remaining records from their printing press and in fact did not know the family ran one from which many early Konkani titles were printed. I think there is an individual who possesses a copy and had once posted an image on flickr maybe - other than that, the British Library in London probably has a copy.

best regards,
Rochelle

Did the Furtados move from the world of books and printing to that of music?
Also, was the firm sold to the Gomes family, somewhere along the way? FN

"Key Milestones in the Takeover
  • 1953: BX Furtado & Sons Acquisition
Originally founded in 1865 by Bernard Xavier Furtado, this branch focused primarily on religious supplies and sporting goods. John Gomes merged his own reputation as a small store owner (Vincent & Co.) with this legacy brand.
  • 1959: LM Furtado & Co Acquisition
Six years later, John acquired LM Furtado & Co, a separate entity that specialized in Western musical instruments. He reportedly won this sale in just 30 minutes because the employees preferred him over other buyers who intended to close certain departments.
  • Unification
John eventually merged both entities under the singular, iconic brand name Furtados.

Modern Leadership
Following John Gomes's semi-retirement in the late 1980s and his death in 2003, the business passed to his four children:
  • Anthony Gomes
  • Christopher Gomes
  • Nonabel Gomes
  • Joseph Gomes
The family further expanded the legacy by founding the Furtados School of Music in 2011."
