MOG Sundays!
Online talk with Selma Carvalho

As an extension of 0832, the on-going exhibition curated by Wendy Amanda Coutinho, Museum of Goa invites you to a talk on 'Goan Journey to Zanzibar' by Selma Carvalho.

Across the expanse of the Indian Ocean lay Zanzibar. Mostly unknown to Goans, and yet from the 1850s, young men set sail for the island. Landing on the beachfront, they settled on a street which came to be known as Rua dos Portuguese. Here, they set up bakeries, butcheries, alcohol stores and provision stores, and rose to extraordinary prominence. Their stories are seldom told. In this talk, we journey back to the 19th century, looking at their lives and just what made them essential to Zanzibar.

Selma Carvalho is the author of the novel Sisterhood of Swans and three non-fiction books which document the Goan presence in colonial East Africa. Her research on the Goan diaspora is widely cited.

Date: 27th November, 2022
Time: 11:30 AM onwards

Thank you Frederick, so sweet of you.

This is a talk with lots of photographs and should be fun.

Take care and hope to see you there.
All best,
Selma

Oh, Fred has suddenly become "sweet" to Selma. How the dynamics change.

Remember the US has no permanent enemies or friends, just national interests.

Can't resist a smile!
I was also struck by 'sweet' but put it down to age-ing newspeak. 'Sweet' is used very expressively in slang. Also, I think, on the way out. As is the way of slang.
Remember, Selma! Don't get your knickers in a knot. I hope your MOG session went very well. And our Fred is indeed sweet when he's not morose and sad and drowning in the internet.
Best wishes
Jeanne

Folks, please don't discuss me... I am not a book.
(Also, I am not a "Fred". But that is entirely another matter; too many years of taking it easy. My fault. Moral of the story: You should not let people take you for granted, lest they really take you for granted.)
To be honest, and for the record, I am long past my best-by date. I am now a full-fledged grumpy old uncle! Not that GOUs don't have their own utility in life. Most of those who know me don't argue with me over this.

Sorry, Frederick. Mea culpa.
I shall refrain from personal comment in future. But I think Roland's comment was worth the pain of your response.
Again, apologies.

Hello Frederick, Do you know if the Session by Selma was recorded, and will it be included in your U-tube video library? It seems an interesting addition to our Emigre Goan Legacy. In this connection my recent release ’Soul Searching in the Seychelles’ also fills a gap that has not been written about before (to the best of my knowledge). It is available on amazon.in as an ebook and can be downloaded into cellphones with a free APP from Amazon.kindle. I have been exploring this aspect, as the cost of the printed book has already risen in price, by more than that, mailing costs have shot through the roof.
Best wishes,
Braz
