Friends,
Naik's Konkani essay on 'how' Acchev happened was published in the special Jaag issue celebrating 150 years of the Konkani novel in early 2012.
If accessing devnagri script Konkani poses a problem perhaps this translation might be of interest to teachers/readers of THE UPHEAVAL.
Regards,
Vidya.

Dear Vidya

Thank you very much for the piece.

Pundalik Naik is definitely a great writer who has enriched the
Konkani language and he is not recognized as much as he should be
world wide because his works are pretty difficult to bring into
English and other languages.

Even more than his novel Acchev, his best work is perhaps in his plays
and there the problems are greater, for a play is best appreciated in
performance. And even as literature how do you translate the greatness
of a play like Shree Vichitrachi Zatra much of whose dialogue is of
poetic quality.

The problem arises because his work embodies the culture of a people
and to translate it one has to translate this culture. But how is one
to do this, for English and other European languages simply does not
know many of the concepts and ways of life that the rural people that
are his subjects, so trying to find words for them can be
excrutiating. And slowly that culture is also being washed away by the
sea of modernity that is quickly engulfing us.

PNN is also notable for bringing to the notice of people in his plays
and literature what was happening in mining affected areas and to the
poor and marginalized by modernization much before the
environmentalists did - only nobody noticed.

Thank you Vidya for bringing this piece to our notice and do keep up
your good work. I'm sure that lots of people will actually get a feel
of what an excellent author that he is through it.

Dear Vidya,
Like I said in my earlier mail, this essay is going to be useful/of interest to both students and teachers who are studying the novel. Incidentally, both, the third year English, as well as the third year Konkani students have Pundalik Naik's novel prescribed for study. Have mailed the essay to them .
Thanks for sending it.
Regards,
Lucy

Hello,

Could you please clarify which script was used for the original version of Acchev by Naik Pundalik Narayan? I am conducting research on ecological themes in literature, specifically through translated works, and have come across Acchev, which is identified as a Konkani novel.

As Konkani is a language that can be written in various scripts, knowing the original script will help ensure accuracy in my research.

Thank you very much for your time and assistance. I look forward to your response.

Warm regards,

Neha, The novel Acchev was written by Pundalik N. Naik in the Devanagari script. In fact, writing in the 1970s, he was among the early generation of young writers who took to writing in a bigger way in Devanagari Konkani in post-1961 Goa.
You would have noticed the background paper translated by Ms Vidya Pai, on PNN's experiences with writing the work. It was pasted above, and sharing it once again in case others might find it interesting too. All the best with your research, What is your topic? FN
