GLUG Meerut: Activities (2008–2025)

2008

  • Indications of the group’s foundation around 2008 — a later post (Aug 2018) mentions “10 years of GLUG Meerut.”

2009

  • FOSSTIVAL 2009 (Jan 9–11, 2009, IIMT Engineering College, Meerut): Organized by GLUG Meerut & IIMT. Hands-on development workshop with two tracks — Open Source Web Development (LAMP) and GNU/Linux System Programming.
76 participants; mentors/guests included Vivek Khullarana, Atul Jha, Gajendra Khanna, Mayank Kumar, and the BOSS (CDAC-Noida) team.
Radio IIMT 90.4 FM carried CC-licensed promo; RMS quote was highlighted. Concluded with a pledge to expand in future editions.

2010

  • Open Source Software Workshop at MIT Meerut — noted in Fedora India mailing list (March 2010).

  • Software Freedom Day 2010 preparations — posts on GLUG Meerut Google Group indicate active planning.

2011

  • No major event record found, but mailing-list activity continued (Google Group archives).

2012

  • First GSoC success from Meerut — Aug 24, 2012 post announced Naman Gupta successfully completed his GSoC project.

  • LinuxSpardha 2012 @ MIT Meerut — announced Sept 28, 2012.

2013

  • IIT Bombay – MIT Meerut – GLUG Meerut Workshop Series — Feb 12, 2013 announcement (Spoken Tutorial/NMEICT collaboration).

  • GSoC 2013 — Oct 22, 2013 post congratulated Naman Gupta on being selected again.

2014–2015

  • Posts showing continuity: e.g. June 24, 2014 — “GLUG Meerut is coming back to its active days soon”; 2015 included Debian 8 “Jessie” release updates and FOSS education forwards.

2016

  • Aug 25, 2016 — celebratory post “Happy 25th Birthday Linux kernel!”

2017

  • Technical Q&A discussions (e.g., encoding issues), and condolence post for the passing of NRCFOSS/CDAC-Chennai’s Srinivasan.

2018 (10th Anniversary)

  • Aug 8, 2018 — “10 years of GLUG Meerut” milestone post.

2019 (10 years of FOSSTIVAL 2009)

  • Feb 14, 2019 — commemorative post “Ten years of FOSSTIVAL 2009.”

2020–2025

  • No clear record of major Meerut-centered events; mailing list activity visibly reduced after 2019.

Key Takeaways

  • Foundation: Around 2008 (confirmed by the 10-year post in 2018).

  • Peak Activity: 2009–2013 — especially FOSSTIVAL 2009, MIT Meerut workshops, LinuxSpardha 2012, IITB-Spoken Tutorial collaboration, and GSoC 2012/2013 successes.

  • Community/Advocacy: 2014–2019 posts about Debian releases, birthdays, anniversaries, and remembrance notes.

Note: The most detailed account is the FOSSTIVAL 2009 report in Open Source For You (OSFY), Feb 1, 2009 — covering sessions, speakers, agenda, participants, Radio IIMT promo, and RMS quote. This is a primary source for FOSS activity in Meerut.
