Dear list,

At times of growing climatic turmoil and geopolitical rivalry, this public roundtable discusses two important publications of this summer: Divided Environments: An International Political Ecology of Climate Change, Water and Security by Jan Selby, Gabrielle Daoust and Clemens Hoffmann (Cambridge University Press 2022) and Simon Dalby’s Rethinking Environmental Security (Edward Elgar 2022). The panelists debate how we can study the complex linkages between climate change, violent conflict, and insecurity and thus address a crucial question of our times: What is security in an age of ecological devastation?

The hybrid roundtable is chaired by:

Ursula Schröder, Director of the IFSH and Professor of Political Science at the University of Hamburg.

With:
  • Simon Dalby, Professor of Geography and Environmental Studies, Wilfrid Laurier University, Waterloo, Ontario
  • Jan Selby, Professor of Politics and International Relations, University of Sheffield
  • Antje Wiener, Professor of Political Science and Global Governance, University of Hamburg
  • Shannon O’Lear, Professor of Geography, University of Kansas

The roundtable is part of the workshop "Climate security: Toward a critical conceptualization", co-organized by the cluster of excellence “Climate, Climatic Change, and Society” and the profile initiative violence and security research at Universität Hamburg and the IFSH.
