Dear GEP-EDers

I’ve been asked to head up a task force at our university to upscale our sustainability activities. I would be very appreciative if any of you who are at universities doing something particularly powerful/effective in this area could share it with me.  I will be happy to collect and send around ideas.

Thanks!

Best wishes

Dear Miranda,

The Copernicus Institute on Sustainable Development at Utrecht University does not allow to serve meat at events paid for, or organized by, the university. Workshop lunches, institute parties, department dinners: all must be vegetarian and are often vegan. This policy cuts across the university.

In addition, our institute has agreed on a train zone around Utrecht. Within this zone you are not allowed to fly for work-related events. For example, from Utrecht to Munich you must take the train; same for London, Paris, Berlin, etc. You‘ll take the train to England and Denmark, but you may fly – if absolutely needed - to Scotland or Finland. The institute compensates higher costs for train tickets.

These are some of the bigger items. We have various initiatives to work towards more ambitious action at university level.

All the best

Frank

Dear Miranda,

Wageningen University and Research has been using the Green Impact program to let smaller working groups (in our case divided per campus building) think of ways/measures to green the building and the university. And facility services is leading this. They among others organize monthly lunch meetings to share experiences, with each meeting having a specific theme (mobility, catering, energy use etc).

Happy to share more if you are interested!

Best,

Hi Miranda,

I don't know what level you're looking at re campus sustainability, but I'm now serving as co-chair of the Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Sustainability here at Berkeley. Newly revised charter here: https://sustainability.berkeley.edu/sites/default/files/copy_of_cacs_ucb_charter_revisedjanuary_2019.pdf - I think what stands out is the range of stakeholders at the table. Big things on our plate for advising: Campus/University Zero Waste and Carbon Neutrality programs, also a sustainability curriculum initiative that will try and knit our diverse strands together and efforts to fund greening campus and meeting those goals given that we still have no money. Happy to talk some more off-line.

Best,

Kate

Thanks Miranda for starting this thread, this is very useful to me as we're starting a similar initiative here on my campus.

Very inspiring to hear about what other universities are doing. It would be great to hear from folks at less well funded campuses as well for ideas of what projects can be undertaken at low/no cost. That's the problem at the University of Moncton where I am, the administration is open but can't put in any money (especially given budget cuts this year).

Thanks,

JP

In the USA I suggest reaching out to your local utility or other energy efficiency promoting institutions, including State, Federal and even local level governments.

A group of Harvard’s faculty mobilized this year to treat climate change far more broadly across the university.  I liked very much how they got beyond direct emissions and campus operations to our research, teaching and leadership of society’s discourse on the issue.

Their white paper is here:

At Brown we have a new draft sustainability plan but I think we need to think and act more broadly.  A group is working on that.

Best,
Timmons

Dear Miranda,

Thank you for starting this thread! I serve on the Sustainability Advisory Council at Yale and would like to share a few resources that colleagues might find useful.

  1. The visual of the history of sustainability at Yale is a useful tool - https://sustainability.yale.edu/about/history
  2. The International Sustainability Campus Network (ISCN) is a forum for exchange of information on sustainability in the higher education sector. They also administer several awards. In 2019, University of Leeds received the Whole Systems Approach award, University of Melbourne – the Partnerships for Progress award, and Yale the award for Cultural Change for Sustainability for developing and deploying department-level sustainability action plans.
  3. Yale’s Sustainability Plan 2025 might be of interest as well as the effort to launch Global Priorities, Educated Solutions: the role of academia in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals on behalf of the International Alliance of Research Universities. This is an online publication with key concepts and case studies related to teaching, research, operations, and service.
  4. Sustainability at Yale was just featured in the newsfeed from the university and an overview of all the different sustainability efforts is available at https://sustainability.yale.edu/news/yale-sustainability-2019-year-review

Dear Miranda and all,

I’d like to introduce you to the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) which works with higher education institutions to advance their sustainability innovations. If you are just starting on your institution's sustainability journey, we generally recommend that you get started focusing on establishing foundational structures (committees, green funds, plans, positions, etc.) that bring more people into the effort and can help guide the long term development of a successful program. It may seem attractive to jump right into projects like installing solar panels and changing lightbulbs, but you'll never be able to move fast enough if you aren't able to bring more people/groups into the effort. Furthermore, doing an assessment - using a tool like STARS (which provides a lot of free resources as well as a paid option) - can be a great place to understand the opportunities available to you.

That being said, if they are just looking for ideas, there are hundreds of inspiring examples in the AASHE Bulletin archives to browse as well as best practices highlighted in the Sustainable Campus Index publications and the Campus Sustainability Hub. Additionally, since it looks like you are from Germany, you may also want to check out the Green Office Movement

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions or are interested to know more about AASHE membership or any of our educational programs

Daita

Dear Miranda, and others,

Two responses to your query about campus sustainability initiatives.

1. According to a recent metric, UC Davis ranks first in the U.S. and third in the world for campus sustainability.  The metric is the 2018 UI GreenMetric World University rankings.  The history, scope and ambitions of the UC Davis campus sustainability program can be gauged from here: https://www.ucdavis.edu/about/sustainability/

2. The New York Times ran an interesting piece on January 31st about the difficulties students at the University of the South faced when they tried to steer Sewanee's very substantial endowment funds in a more sustainable direction, and this on a campus that had a sustainability plan, at least on paper.  See https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/31/your-money/sewanee-endowment-climate-divestment.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share
