Hi friends. Thank you for your support of the #flyingless initiative (flyingless.org).
In this month's update:
Lifestyles of the NOT Jet Set. Three new episodes have been posted for this
YouTube video series, which is a personal response to some of the most difficult questions we get when speaking with academic audiences about our initiative. People ask us if less flying would mean the destruction of their research careers, or the loss
of meaningful engagement with people and history in diverse places. I say we can fly less and still meet our most cherished goals.
Organization for Human Brain Mapping (OHBM). I contributed
a video lecture to a lively conference session about sustainability in neuroscience and related fields. One field after another is beginning to rise to the occasion.
American Philosophical Association (APA) Low-carbon Conference Schedule. After a campaign from members concerned about the climate crisis, drawing in part on resources from our initiative, the American Philosophical Association
(APA) is piloting a program to
replace one third of their conferences with a virtual format.
Stan Cox, The Path to a Livable Future: A New Politics to Fight Climate Change, Racism, and the Next Pandemic.
Joe Nevins has
a book review.
Stay Grounded.
The Stay Grounded initiative has an upcoming conference in Lille, France, in October, and continues to publish wonderful resources on
communication
strategy for aviation and climate and many other topics.
Petition growth. After unusually rapid growth in the preceding quarter, the #flyingless petition had
slow growth in the past quarter. It now has 1995 supporters, so somebody soon will be our 2000th supporter. Please continue to share the
main website link (flyingless.org) widely, and feel free to send us any ideas for further promotion. We are active on Twitter (@flyingless)
and appreciate retweets and quote tweets to reach new audiences. We have merely placeholder accounts on Instagram (@notjetset) and TikTok (@flyingless),
and don't know how to use those sites well, so it would be super helpful if some of you active in those spaces promote this initiative in your own voice.
Let us promote your work. If you have work or publications related to academic #flyingless, let us know about it at email academicfly...@gmail.com or parke...@gmail.com or
on Twitter @flyingless. We can promote it on social media, in future blog posts, and through the Katz-Rosene
resource list.
